This week has been a truly special gathering, with Bangarra’s Youth Ensemble and Artistry Youth Dance coming together for a week-long collaboration exploring identity, culture and connection through movement, storytelling and creative exchange.

These images capture some beautiful moments from earlier in the week, when Uncle Matthew Doyle joined us in the studio to share traditional dance and cultural knowledge with the young dancers.

More than a creative collaboration, this exchange marks the beginning of a meaningful partnership between Bangarra and AYD - one grounded in cultural sharing, artistic growth and the building of lasting connections between the next generation of young artists.

A powerful cultural exchange is now underway!

This week, young artists who were selected by the Bangarra Youth and Education Program to create the Bangarra Youth Ensemble and London-based Artistry Youth Dance come together in Sydney for a unique international collaboration.

Through dance, storytelling and cultural sharing, these emerging artists will explore identity, heritage and connection while creating new work that celebrates who they are and where they come from.

We are on the search for new dancers for 2027!

Applications are now open to young dance artists aged 18 and above to apply for the opportunity to audition for Bangarra Dance Theatre, for consideration as either as a company dancer or as part of the Russell Page Graduate Program.

Successful applicants will be invited to audition for the opportunity to be considered for future engagement with the company. We are storytellers and fire makers who draw on 65,000 years of culture to create and perform contemporary dance theatre, while inspiring the next generation of cultural leaders and creating lasting impact. Please note that participation in the audition process does not guarantee a contract or future engagement with Bangarra.

Applications are open to Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Island dance artists over the age of 18.

Applications must close Wednesday 2 September 2026.

Today, on International Day of the World’s Indigenous People, we celebrate the strength, knowledge and enduring cultures of First Nations peoples around the world. From generation to generation, Indigenous communities have safeguarded language, story, culture and connection to Country, carrying wisdom that continues to shape our present and guide our future.

Through contemporary dance and theatre, Bangarra Dance Theatre honour the stories entrusted to us by Elders and Communities and creating space for cultural knowledge with audiences across Australia and beyond.

This day is an opportunity to recognise the vital contributions of Indigenous peoples globally and to reflect on the responsibility we all share in listening, learning from, and together being uplifted by our local and global Indigenous voices.

Today, on National Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Children’s Day, we celebrate the voices, stories and knowledge of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander children, families and Communities.

This year’s theme, Living Our Truth, recognises the importance of truth-telling in strengthening identity, belonging and connection to culture. It honours the role of Elders, families and Communities in sharing knowledge across generations and celebrates children as the next generation of strong, proud leaders.

For more than a decade, Bangarra’s flagship youth program, Rekindling, has created space and opportunities with its programs engaging with young Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students to celebrate culture through dance, storytelling and learning with Community Elders.

Together, we can all help create a future where every child is seen, heard and celebrated.

A week with Bangarra Dance Theatre

Earlier this month, students spent the week learning, creating and connecting with members of Bangarra Dance Theatre through classes, workshops, choreography and a Q&A.

It’s one of the many opportunities students have to learn from leading First Nations companies and artists, building industry knowledge, networks and experience while training at NAISDA.

A huge thank you to the Bangarra Dance Theatre team for sharing your knowledge and time, and the generousity of the Canny Quine Foundation for its generous support of these unique learning experiences and masterclasses.

Our company has just touched down back in Australia, carrying with us the energy, beauty and deep significance of our time in Venice. From the streets and canals of the city to the stage at Biennale Danza, these moments mark a special chapter for Bangarra and for the stories we continue to share with the world. Yesterday, we were the proud recipients of the Golden Lion for Lifetime Achievement in Dance, awarded at the 20th International Festival of Contemporary Dance, of La Biennale di Venezia. Presented by President of La Biennale di Venezia, Pietrangelo Buttafuoco, and Director of the Dance Department, Wayne McGregor, the Golden Lion was received by our former Artistic Director, Stephen Page, alongside our current Artistic Director and Co-CEO, Frances Rings, in the Sala delle Colonne at Ca’ Giustinian.

Receiving the Golden Lion is a celebration of our artistic and cultural songline, honouring those who have shaped Bangarra’s 37-years and those who stand with us today. We are deeply grateful to everyone who has walked with us and been part of our story - from our first footsteps to this moment. To our First Nations communities, Elders and cultural consultants, alumni, dancers, creatives, staff and Board, patrons and supporters - we thank you. Each of you has created part of the legacy we carry into the future.
