When an employer is preparing a 186 nomination, looking only at the minimum income threshold is not enough.

For nominations lodged in 2026–27, the Core Skills Income Threshold is $79,423. However, the employer also needs to consider the Annual Market Salary Rate (AMSR) for the nominated position. The relevant salary requirements need to be satisfied as part of the nomination.

For employers, this means the proposed salary should be assessed against the applicable market salary requirements before the nomination is submitted. For employees, it's important to understand that simply being offered a salary above the published threshold does not, by itself, establish that the salary requirement has been met.

The right question isn't just “Is the salary above the threshold?” It's “Does the proposed salary meet the requirements for this particular position?”

A promotion can change more than your job title. If you're being sponsored for a 482, the actual duties of the nominated position need to align with the occupation being nominated.

For employers, this means the position, duties and salary should be reviewed before the nomination is lodged. For employees, it's important to understand whether the role you're being sponsored for genuinely reflects the work you'll be doing.

A higher salary does not automatically create an immigration issue, but a significant change in duties or moving into a different occupation can.

Before lodging a 482 nomination, make sure the job title, actual duties, nominated occupation and salary all tell the same story.
