Photos, privacy, permission — what to do now. 📷🛡️
With the new safeguarding focus from 1 Sept, services have updated their policies. Always follow your service’s most recent policy and procedures.
If your service has paused/removed permission for photos of children:
Document without faces: hands at play, close-ups of learning, environment set-ups.
Use words & work samples: short learning notes, child quotes (first initial), drawings/creations.
Explain the “why” to families in simple terms and share how learning is still captured.
If your service still permits privacy-safe photos:
- Ask first (children and families): “Is it OK if…?”
- Explain where/why the photo will be used and who can see it.
- Use only service-approved processes/devices and follow storage & deletion rules.
- Minimise identifiers: no names in-frame, no location tags, avoid uniforms/house numbers.
- Share with the right people only; never to personal socials.
Small, consistent habits build big trust with families — and keep children’s rights and safety front and centre.

Children’s rights are not privileges – they are fundamental human rights that must guide every decision we make in early education.
The United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child (UNCRC) makes clear that children have the right to be heard, to feel safe, to thrive in supportive environments, and to be treated with dignity and respect. These rights are embedded in Australia’s National Quality Framework, which means they should be visible across every aspect of early childhood education and care.
For educators, upholding children’s rights is about:
✔ creating safe and inclusive environments
✔ listening to and valuing children’s voices
✔ reflecting regularly on practice
✔ continuing to deepen our understanding through professional learning
Our child protection ebook unpacks these principles, explores common misconceptions about children’s rights, and provides practical strategies for embedding them into everyday practice.

🌱🌳 Today is World Environment Day and the focus is on land restoration, desertification and drought resilience this year. The global event helps to inspire action and awareness to protect the environment for future generations.
💡 A fun activity for today is to reuse egg cartons to do a seed experiment at your service. This is also a great healthy eating learning experience.

🏀⚾ The Fundamental Movement Skill of the month is catching! It is a manipulative skill that involves receiving an object or ball that has been thrown, hit or kicked towards you. Your eyes follow the object and you catch it with your hands.

🥦🥕🍒 Did you know that frozen fruit and vegetables are just as healthy as fresh varieties?
Frozen fruit and vegetables contain the same nutrients as fresh produce. Fresh fruit and vegetables are snap frozen not long after being picked, which helps to preserve their vitamins and minerals. They can also be cheaper, especially if you are buying produce that is not in season. Buying frozen fruit and vegetables can also help reduce food waste because you use the amount you need and put the rest back in the freezer.
