As National Child Protection Week draws to a close, it is crucial that we prioritize the safety of our children online. As an author empowering individuals with disabilities, I strongly believe in fostering a safe and inclusive environment for all. It deeply saddens me to hear about the numerous arrests that occur every day in NSW involving children, especially in light of this important week.

These arrests serve as a stark reminder of the dangers that our children face online. It is crucial for parents and caregivers to remain vigilant and educated about online safety. Even innocent images can be exploited by online predators for their own gratification.

In my book, "The Invisible Line," I provide practical tools to empower individuals with disabilities, with a strong emphasis on communication prompts and setting boundaries in challenging situations.

As National Child Safety Week approaches, let's shift our attention towards prioritizing the safety, well-being, and empowerment of children with disabilities.

It is essential that we rally together as a community to create inclusive environments, educate ourselves and others on child safety measures specifically tailored for children with disabilities, and champion initiatives that address their unique needs.

By actively promoting their safety and fostering their growth, we can build a more inclusive and supportive society that truly values the potential of all children.

Every child deserves the right to practice body autonomy, regardless of their abilities.

In our book “My Invisible Line”, Sam a determined vision-impaired child expressed his independence to his mum. When Sam confidently declared he doesn't need help drying off after a shower, it was a powerful moment for both him and his mother.

As a vision-impaired child, Sam has already faced numerous challenges in his daily life. But this particular moment showcased his growing confidence and self-awareness. It was a reminder that disability does not define a person's capabilities or right to make choices.

This story of Sam and his mother serves as a reminder to us all. It highlights the importance of recognising and honouring the right to practice body autonomy for children, especially those with disabilities. It is through this recognition that we can promote inclusion, foster self-confidence, and empower individuals to reach their full potential.

Let's empower all children, including those with disabilities, to exercise their autonomy and foster their self-confidence.
