NOTICE HOW THE ATO ARE TARGETING THE MIDDLE CLASS? AUDITING MANY DENTAL PRACTICES AND THEIR AFFILIATE BUSINESSES

BOWIE DICK TEST FOR YOUR STERILISER? NO SUCH THING!

On the morning cycle of your steriliser you may be using either:

- an orange plastic helix device
- an aluminium helix device
- a Green Card
- a box bowie dick pack test
- a standard indicator strip

ALL of the above do not work for your dental office based practice B-Class benchtop steriliser.

- The orange plastic device was invented in the 1970's as a means to be used in EVERY cycle with handpieces - and today there is a flaw in most of those devices - check the crack at the back of the device near the top screw - it allows steam to breach the top too easily - plus its plastic - therefore its not a challenge to any handpiece

- The aluminium device does not represent any handpiece and is the WORST device to use in a steriliser as it will damage your steriliser by creating galvanising particles that will corrode metals, oxide deposits will also develop in the chamber, as will staining of the chamber - never use these!

- The Green Card was invented to measure 4Kg of linin in American large hospital sterilisers - you do not sterilise linen, you do not have a large steam steriliser and your practice is not in America - why these are even being sold into the ANZ market is a mystery

- 7kg Linen packs - used for large hospital steam sterilisers to measure linen - you do not sterilise linen! Period, and you are NOT a hospital.

- Standard indictor strips - totally useless in any morning cycle as there is no instruments in that cycle to sterilise - its empty.

So WHY are these being sold into the dental market? Many dental practices believe that the mere fact they are being sold in abundance simply justifies their use - "everyone is using them so they must be compliant" - totally false.

The fact is no one really knows why they are being sold, not even the ones selling them know, but its just the norm.

However the FACTS remain:

1. They do not work
2. They are NOT mandatory
3. You're wasting your money

IMAGINE TAKING $30,000 CASH AND THROWING IT OFF A CLIFF - THATS WHAT YOU’RE DOING

As a dental practice you probably don’t even realise it, but you’re burning cash away on things you don’t need.

It’s a shame they do not teach you about finance or ISO science in dental school as these are key areas of knowledge required to run a practice.

You simply follow suit, buy what you’re told to buy, mimic what everyone else is doing etc, and never question anything. This is the norm, and you’re always doing the norm.

You look at online social media and see these advertisements:

- get 100 extra patients each year

- how to sell your practice for more than it’s worth

- how to bring back old patients

- how to turn your practice into a money making machine

There may be many success stories in these areas, but more likely than not you will find 1 success story in every 100, the others fail, sometimes dismally. If you’re paying these “marketeers” for their amazing proven strategies and it turns out the strategies don’t work, do you get your money back? Of course not! This demonstrates the lack of confidence in their strategies.

If many practices are adopting these marketing strategies then it’s only a matter of time before you’re all running the same strategy in your practices, and in the end you simply get yourself into a price war with your competition.

It’s no different with dental supply companies. None of them are any different to one another, all selling the same brands, their websites are the same, and in the end it’s nothing more than a price war. It’s like haggling for a bargain at a flea market, frustrating and energy draining.

Of course most of the consumables you buy you simply do not require, and you’re doing nothing but burning away that cash you’re working hard for.

You do not need a marketing strategy. Your marketing strategy are your hands and brain. You know what you do best which is provide care for your patients. All you need to make your business profit well is:

- reduction of costs on products you do not need

- increased labour productivity

- reduced process and labour downtime

That’s it. Nothing else. Your business will grow.

But how to do this? It’s very very easy. Simply conform your practice to ISO standards.

This is nothing new. It’s been around since 1947. But in dentistry we have moved away from the science of ISO and moulded into word of mouth, unproven, un-validated hearsay of sales reps, technicians, associations and guidelines. All untested, unproven and at a huge cost to your practice.

A good example of this is booking in an 8 hour training session with an external infection control trainer.

What are you being taught? Hand hygiene, how to clean instruments, how to sterilise instruments, how to disinfect a dental chair, plus other random things.

What you don’t realise is that you already know all this. You do it every day. It makes no difference if you wipe a bench along the grain or against the grain.

It makes no difference if you air dry a surface or dry with a towel.

You clean and sterilise your instruments multiple times a day. How can an external person train you on this when you and your team do it thousands of times more often than the trainer? There’s no real “right” or “wrong” way to scrub an instrument.

Hand hygiene? YouTube offer free 15min courses

Some trainers charge an arm and a leg for these courses. $7000 for 8 hours of training is not $7000. Add up everything:

- $7000 = training fee

- Labour downtime hours? What’s the cost?

- Patient downtime hours? What’s the cost?

- Plus your own time?

WHEN FOLLOWING ADVICE IN DENTAL INFECTION CONTROL AND WHS, ARE THERE ANY GUARANTEES? NO? DON'T YOU THINK THERE SHOULD BE?

Most dental practices follow suit - go along to get along. Throughout this process, common sense just gets lost. Then practices are buying products they don't need, but they do not realise this because flooding your practice with junk consumables has become the "norm".

But what you don't realise is that when new procedures are introduced in these areas (eg: steri), they take up far too much time for both dentists and DA's, and you end up paying DA's to spend half their time in the steri area, rather than with patients, calling patients, rebooking patients, or other things such as updating your website or social media pages.
