In Year 3 HSIE library lessons, our students explored the ancient communication systems used by the Maya, Aztec, and Inca. They discovered how these civilisations used symbols, pictures, knots, and calendars to record stories and keep track of time.
Today, we use emojis, books, charts, and calendars—ideas inspired by those ancient systems. Our students compared these then-and-now communication methods and practiced writing sentences explaining these connections.
It’s exciting to see how ideas from thousands of years ago still help us share information today.

This term, 3B have been studying the text 'Sadako and the Thousand Paper Cranes,' which tells the moving story of a young Japanese girl who lived in Hiroshima. Through our exploration of the book, students have learnt about themes of hope, resilience, and peace, as well as the symbolism of paper cranes in Japanese culture. 3B have engaged in activities such as discussing character motivations, writing reflections on Sadako’s courage, and creating their own paper cranes to deepen their connection to the story. This unit has encouraged empathy and thoughtful discussion around global issues, history, and the importance of perseverance in difficult times.

Miss Pennisi, our EALD teacher for Years 3 and 4, has been supporting her small group of students as they develop their English skills. Through engaging activities such as labelling, matching, concentration and bingo games, Q and A sessions, miming and craft, students can practice their speaking, listening, reading and writing in a fun creative environment. Great work everyone!

Students in 3-6D created a Community Library as part of their Science Unit and it is now available for borrowing. The rules were created with thoughtful discussion from the class.
3–6D has also been reading Sadako and learning about the inspiring story. As part of their exploration of the text, students created their own lanterns, thoughtfully designing and decorating them to reflect themes of hope, peace, and remembrance. This hands-on activity helped students make meaningful connections to the story and its message. We are so proud of all our students!
