A lot of students walk out of exams saying:
“But I actually knew that.”
And honestly, they probably did.
The problem is that most students only study content - not exam performance.
There’s a huge difference between:
• recognising information while studying
and
• retrieving it under pressure, against the clock, in a silent exam hall.
That’s why doing more reading, highlighting and watching solutions often stops working after a certain point.
Good exam results come from:
• retrieval practice
• timed past papers
• exam technique
• pressure simulation
• learning how marks are actually awarded
These are trainable skills.
If this post sounded familiar, don’t panic - it’s fixable. 📚

If your study strategy = highlighters… this might hurt a little.
Highlighting feels productive.
Your notes look clean, colourful, organised.
But feeling productive ≠ actually learning.
Here’s the problem:
Recognising information is easy.
Recalling it from memory? That’s what exams test.
👉 Recognition is shallow.
👉 Retrieval is what sticks.
Try this instead:
Read a page → close the book → write down everything you remember.
It’ll feel uncomfortable. That’s the point.
That discomfort = your brain actually working.
Save this. Send it to your study group.
Your future self will thank you 🎓
