Discussion 4 # What to do if you want to change your course?

Considering you are a SC500 holder, If you are changing your course and also the education provider, then you must consider the 6 months main course study period requirements.

According to the Department of Home Affairs (DHA), you must stay in the same level course or a higher level unless you are changing from a PHD to Master's degree. Otherwise, you may in breach of your 8202 condition.

You must apply for a new student visa if you are lowering your Australian Qualification Framework (AQF) level or moving to a Non-AQF level program. The same treatment applies even if its within the same education provider.

If you are lowering from a Doctoral degree to a Master's degree, then you do not need to apply for a new visa.

In the event where you have not finished studying 6 months of study, you can apply for a Transfer Request according to the transfer request policy of your provider. If the request is approved, then you are free to move to your chosen provider or course. If the request is not approved and you want to appeal the decision, you can do this initially with the current provider and then through to your state or territory ombudsman or Overseas Student Ombudsman.
