Sydney in lockdown🔓A perfect time to clean out our grinders! 🧹
Now why bother?
It impacts our coffee taste 😋
How so?
Grind retention! 😮💨
Grind retention = the amount of coffee grinds that remain in your grinder after your coffee is ground.
Long story short - old grinds end up in your cup, which changes your flavour profile. 🤔
So while some people get grinders with zero retention or close to zero, the simplest way is just.. to do a good old-fashioned spring clean

Now, I’m not suggesting you spend money on a bottomless portafilter if you don’t need one - but if you have one, this video shows you what the coffee flow should look like if you have ground, distributed & tamped your grounds right👌🏻
An even, caramel coloured (to start with) liquid, thick & flowing in the middle of the spout. Until it changes slowly to a blonde colour.
The next video will show an improperly tamped shot, just for reference 😉

Throwback.
Congratulations to K&R on having twins! 🥳🍼🍼👶🏻👶🏻
It’s not easy having two at once, but hey, coffee is always here to help 😉
We started off with fixing up the settings to their Breville Barista Express - followed by our practical sessions on espresso extraction and milk frothing. 🥛
And after several tries, we now have two new home baristas - ready to take on the world. 🌏

It was a great session with you last weekend! 😁
R and his wife were pretty good with their machine, but wanted a refresher on things they’ve learnt before. 👩🏫
We also went through how to get a really good clean of their machine! 🌊
As we like to say - maintenance is what is going to keep your machine out of the shop. 👩🏻🔧🛠
Regular cleaning goes a long way ☺️
