I’d like to share some stories with you today about a really special time in my life!
From 2013-2015 I spent time living overseas as a part of my language studies. I had studied French and German in school, but I soon realised that speaking a language in the classroom and speaking a language in real life were two completely different things!
In 2013, I spent my summer holidays living in Germany working as an Au Pair. The family I worked for was so lovely, and we’re still friends today. My main task was to care for the two children and speak with them in English. The funny thing was, I wasn’t allowed to tell them that I could speak any German, in case they got a little bit lazy and decided to just talk to me in German! So, I had to act as if I couldn’t understand them, which in some moments was hard, and in other moments it was very easy (my German wasn’t very advanced back then, so I truly didn’t understand them!) Ironically, although I didn’t speak all that much German on this trip, I listened A LOT, which really improved my pronunciation. So much so, in fact, that when I returned to university after the summer was over, a German person asked me what part of Germany I was from, after listening to me speak!! I think that might be one of my proudest moments!
In 2014 came my biggest challenge yet. I was hired to work as an English language assistant in a city called Nancy in France. I had never had any real training, and I was more like the English teacher than the assistant, because the teachers in the school couldn’t speak any English. It was the first time where I had to completely rely on my ability to speak French to survive, and I had a constant fear of not understanding others or being understood. Making phone calls and sending emails in French was something I dreaded. Google Translate was my best friend!
The reason I’m telling you this is all of these difficult experiences ultimately made me a stronger person and improved my language. I know how it feels to be living in a different country, away from your family and friends and everything you know. Living overseas isn’t easy, but it’s the most valuable experience anyone can have.
Do you agree?

The ZERO article! 👌🏼
It can be tricky to know when or not to use an article in English! 🤯
The chances are, it’s probably not the same in your language, so direct translation won’t work 👎🏼
0️⃣ Sometimes in English we use a zero article, which is where there is no ‘a/an/the’
➡️ Here are a few general rules to follow regarding zero articles!
