ME: So why do you want to reduce your accent?

Them: I just like to improve myself.

Me: Ok, but why do you want to improve in this area?

Them: I just want to sound better.

Me: I see, and how will that make a difference to your life?

Them: well, to be honest I think sometimes people don't take me seriously.

Me: go on...

Them: Well, sometimes they don't seem to understand my ideas and I think it's something in the way I sound.

Me: So they misunderstand you and ask you to repeat?

Them: yes, and sometimes they just don't respond in the way that makes me feel they respect my idea as much as someone who is native.

Me: ah i see. So it's about being persuasive. You would like to be more persuasive. And you think accent might have something to do with that.

Them: yes, exactly!

"Is that because you hear lazy native speakers not making an effort and suddenly you think...oh maybe im out of my depth here?"

"YES!"

"yeah so, you lose confidence and then make everything worse"

"YES!"

"got it, let's fix that up."

High school girl interviewed me for her project on Accent Prejudice.

High school girl: Does gender matter when it comes to accent prejudice?

Me: no. I've never heard that.

High school girl: what's the most common nationality that come for help with accent?

Me: I have such a broad mix of Europe and Asia, and I mean all over Asia. And all over Europe. And Middle east countries too.

High School Girl: Why do you think accent affects job opportunities?

Me: firstly there is clarity. Secondly there is style. Clarity is obvious and conscious. Style is subtle and works on people without them noticing. Wear a nice suit and that's style. You don't know why you respect me, you don't even know that you do. But you do.

High School Girl: Do different suburbs have different accents?

Me: of course! Chatswood vs Bankstown? lol

Girl: do you get people with broad Australian accents trying to soften or mostly foreigners?

Me: yes I do get outback People in corporate who have been told they need to sound more serious! But mostly its people who speak English as a foreign language.

Why do we promise ourselves we will ‘never’? What if we are closing the doors to not only great tasting cheese but big opportunities in life?
