Elkonin (sound) boxes are a helpful tool that supports students by providing a visual aid for blending or segmenting sounds. When segmenting, the boxes can be used to map each sound heard, with the word pronounced slowly and each sound stretched. The number of sounds (phonemes) is then counted, and a dot or mark is placed in each box. As learning progresses, the dots or marks can be replaced with the corresponding letters. Using magnetic letters can reduce the mental load of handwriting, and magnetic digraphs help learners recognize letter combinations that make each sound. As skills progress, handwriting the letters of each sound can be added.
