For many career practitioners, industry and employer connections are the backbone of creating success for students. We know that 70% of career practitioners want industry to be involved in student post-school planning, and are advocating for various forms of engagement with industry such as in-school presentations, job programs, development of resources, and an overall more substantial role in schools.
This year, Career Tools launched the first of many industry guides and lesson plans for schools that are developed in consultation with key industry bodies. Offering a free professional learning this week was another step in utilising Year13 partnerships to connect career practitioners and schools to industry.
As Australia shifts towards renewable energy, offshore wind farms will provide a new source of large-scale, clean and reliable electricity that creates huge new investment, jobs and innovation opportunities, especially in key regional centres.
On Tuesday 17th October, Year13 & Career Tools invited career advisers from around NSW to attend SXSW Sydney and hear from Oceanex Energy about the thousands of jobs that will be created by offshore wind projects. Thank you to Investment NSW for hosting us at the inspiring NSW House exhibition space.

Year13 and Career Tools are excited to announce the launch of the Career Pass last week at EduTECH Australia, in association with our partners Learning Vault and Edalex.
Career Pass is a verifiable digital record of a student’s learning experiences, skills, abilities and achievements. This “learner passport” serves as a comprehensive overview of a person’s educational journey and provides a holistic view of both academic and non-academic abilities that can be curated and shared.
Co-Ceo Saxon Phipps says “Since our inception 11 years ago, Year13’s mission has been to transform the school-to-work transition. The Career Pass is a key part of that journey. Not only will it drive better equity within the education system, but it will also improve the confidence that young people have in themselves and their abilities.”
Career Pass will:
• Provide a digital credentialing and badging system to keep track of verified achievements and skills
• Build student confidence and navigational capacity for lifelong career learning
• Ensure student post-school plans match aspiration and skills
• Create a clear vision of skill matching to reduce unfavourable post-school career decision pressures sometimes imparted by schools, parents and/or societal expectations
• Connect students with industry, employers and educational institutions
• Work to solve skill shortages
We are rolling the Career Pass out shortly with key customers and will have more announcements soon. If you would like to learn more, visit our website https://careerpass.year13.com.au/
where you can register your interest and be part of our pilot program!

Out of 74,810 Career Plan respondents from students in schools across Australia, 56% are owning their career decisions and identifying themselves as their own greatest influencer. We already know the value of school-based career practitioners as critical for navigational capacity and empowering students to develop this level of self-efficacy. What we can also see is that the influence of parents is strong, with over 21,000 (or 29%) students acknowledging parents as their main influencers.

Does your institution collect post-school destination data?
For some it's mandatory to complete one survey, for some even two, and for others none at all. Regardless, we should be placing higher importance on this data collection process, absent of tokenism. There's much we can learn to inform future practice and raise the profile of career development, and in hand the value of qualified career practitioners in schools.
Collecting student post-school destination data provides crucial information to your educational institution to enable continuous evaluation and improvement of career development programs, enhance school support systems, and promote alumni engagement and networking.
We understand all of this can be time consuming among every other task. The Career Tools Destination Survey feature can reduce the time usually taken for this task by 95% each time.
Empower your students using map and tour knowledge to foster self-efficacy and nurture aspirations.
