R U OK?

Sometimes, a simple question can make a big difference.

Today, we’re taking a moment to check in with the people around us — our children, families, educators, friends and colleagues.

A conversation doesn’t have to be big or complicated.
Ask. Listen. Check in again.

Because sometimes, knowing someone is there is what matters most.

R U OK?

Last week was Emergency Drill Week at Alfred Street Early Education Centre, giving our children the opportunity to explore fire safety and emergency awareness through fun, hands-on experiences.

Our toddlers stepped into the role of firefighters, working together to spray water and “put out” a pretend fire. It was a great way to practise teamwork while becoming familiar with the idea of responding to an emergency.

Our preschoolers extended their learning through firefighter socio-dramatic play and explored a fire truck, using the experience to investigate colours. They also designed their own safety vests using orange paper, soil and loose parts, making their own creative choices as they explored the role of a firefighter.

A week full of play, creativity and meaningful learning about safety, teamwork and emergency awareness.

Something special is waiting at F.S. Garside Park Playground in Granville.

Our educators at Alfred Street Early Education Centre have created a fun Literacy Hunt for local families to enjoy. Keep your eyes peeled for hidden book-themed images inspired by beloved children's stories, and you might even discover a special book treasure to take home.

Visit the playground this week, explore together and see what you can find. Happy hunting, and we hope you enjoy this little adventure with your family.

There's something special about learning beyond the classroom.

Our recent park excursion gave the children at Alfred Street Early Education Centre the opportunity to explore, play and connect with their surroundings. From climbing and balancing to running, discovering and making choices in their play, every moment encouraged growing confidence and independence.

Excursions also provide valuable opportunities to practise safety in real-world settings. With the guidance of our educators, children learnt to stay together, recognise boundaries, follow road safety expectations and care for one another while enjoying the freedom to explore.

These shared experiences help children build confidence, strengthen friendships and create lasting memories through play.

These symbols tell stories...

As part of our NAIDOC Week celebrations, our preschool children explored Aboriginal symbols by drawing an emu and a rainbow in the sand. The emu symbol represents one of Australia's significant native animals and its connection to Country, while the rainbow symbol represents the beauty and wonder of the natural world.

Through this hands-on experience, children discovered that symbols can be used to share stories, represent ideas, and pass on cultural knowledge. Experiences like these foster curiosity, creativity, and communication while helping children develop respect for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander cultures and strengthen their connection to the world around them.

Learning through connection, culture, and creativity.

For a few magical weeks, our children became scientists, storytellers and nature explorers as they followed the incredible life cycle of a butterfly.

From carefully observing the cocoons to celebrating the moment three beautiful butterflies emerged, children experienced the wonder of transformation firsthand. Each day sparked new questions, conversations and discoveries as they watched the butterflies grow stronger and learned how sugar water helped support them before their release.

This meaningful experience supported early scientific inquiry as children observed change over time, made predictions and developed an understanding of living things and their needs. Literacy learning flourished through rich discussions, new vocabulary and sharing observations, while numeracy concepts emerged through counting, sequencing the life cycle and tracking daily changes.

The highlight was release day. Together, the children gathered to watch the butterflies spread their wings and enter the world. As they stood side by side, excitement and joy echoed throughout the centre—a beautiful reminder that some of the most powerful learning happens when children experience wonder together.

Today, we pause to honour the courage, sacrifice, and service of the men and women who have served our country. Their bravery and legacy will always be remembered.

For children, learning numerals in everyday life can mean exploring numbers through creativity and play.

This week for Earth Day, the preschool children at Alfred Street Early Education Centre created an imaginary beach using sand, shells, blue paint, leaves, and natural materials. As they counted, sorted, mixed colours, and designed collages, they were developing early numeracy skills while learning to appreciate the beauty of our environment.

Meaningful learning happens when imagination, nature, and discovery come together.
