If you were to ask a pregnant woman what her #1 worry is when it comes to breastfeeding, chances are 'mastitis' would be in her top 3.

The reality for many women is, breastfeeding may be 'natural' - but it isn't always easy. πŸ’–

And when complications such as engorgement and mastitis arise, it can be painful and stressful for the breastfeeding mother who already has so much to deal with.πŸ™πŸ½

Mastitis, otherwise known as an inflammation of the breast, is typically caused by congestion in the ductal networks and/ or a blocked milk duct resulting in swollen, hot, and red breasts.

It's not uncommon for breast engorgement to develop into mastitis if not addressed early on.
Other signs and symptoms of mastitis include flu-like symptoms such as fever, fatigue, and aches. πŸ€’

Some women report a burning sensation while breastfeeding.

If symptoms of engorgement or mastitis become evident for you, to avoid further complications, please seek help from your midwife or other trusted healthcare professional.✨

Do you know how breast milk is actually produced? 🀱🏻

With the over supply of confusing and conflicting information, it's understandable if you don't. πŸ€·πŸ»β€β™€οΈ

The underlying principle of milk volume is to stimulate hormone production to keep the milk flowing through both breasts at each feed, with a rest and digest period in between the first and second breast. πŸ”›

With so many Women feeling pressured into taking supplements to increase their milk volume, Dr Robyn prefers to suggest gentle and rhythmical stimulation of the breasts which takes time and patience.⏳

It's all about getting back to the basics and understanding how breast milk production actually works. πŸ“–

The Thompson Method evolved from the belief that breastfeeding should be gentle and that a Woman deserves the confidence to trust her maternal instincts. πŸ’•And that, above all, breastfeeding should be enjoyable and magical for both mother and baby.

As a certified Thompson Method Practitioner and IBCLC, Kelly and her team can help you reduce the risk of breastfeeding complications, including the stress of low milk volume. πŸ’–

Many women, particularly first time mothers, are focused on their labour and birth, hoping that breastfeeding will just happen.

Logically, this makes sense because a woman’s body is physically designed to give birth to and breastfeed her baby.

It is one of the most natural things a woman can do right?

Unfortunately, this does not end up being the case for many women.

Why?

Well, there are a number of reasons!

πŸ‘‰ It’s likely that the breastfeeding information you’ll be taught in hospital will be inconsistent, conflicting and quite possibly out of date.

πŸ‘‰ It’s also likely that you’ll be rapidly processed because of time constraints with hospital policy, often placing you under pressure to make quick decisions.

πŸ‘‰ And it’s likely that you’ll be taught or shown forceful breastfeeding techniques that are closely associated with painful ni**le trauma

ALL of this creates unnecessary stress and can become quite overwhelming for the breastfeeding mother of a newborn baby, who already has enough to deal with.

What if… you were FULLY prepared for giving birth in the hospital system so that you could make the system WAIT while you considered your options?

What if… you REALLY understood how the decisions you made during your labour and birth influenced your breastfeeding journey?

It’s important to acknowledge that things don’t always go to plan, and medical intervention is required for SOME women and babies.

But for MOST women, medical intervention is NOT necessary.

And by being well informed and fully prepared BEFORE having your baby you can REDUCE THE RISK of common complications with both birth and breastfeeding.

Advice from well-meaning friends and family may result in you feeling pressure to appease them, but often leaves you and your baby in all sorts of trouble.
