USYD Gardening Society community garden kin visited our UNSW community garden for our last working bee and this week we visited their amazing creation! Amazing and fast transformation of a gravel lot to a site of abundance and community. We left heartened and inspired, with bellies full of snap peas and mizuna :)!

Such a good time in the garden today at Term 2's working bee! People taught each other about sow thistle (the massive edible w**d that's in season right now -- w**d and dine!) and about making capers from warrigal greens flower buds. Thanks to new volunteer Valentina and to Marcel, who visited from USYD Gardening Society. The Cage Garden is looking good this winter!

The Producers x UNSW Urban Growers | Seed Saving Workshop | Urban Garden
You are invited to a free hands-on workshop led by A/Prof Tema Milstein at the ARC Producers Urban Garden about seed saving!
The Producers (Arc Sustainability) are teaming up with UNSW Urban Growers to bring you a practical workshop on 'seed saving'. This is a practice that farmers, home gardeners and First Nations peoples have used well before packets of seeds became available to buy from retailers. We will be collecting seeds from the fruit and vegetable plants in the Urban Garden for you to take home and help on your journey of growing your very own food!
This will take place at the Urban Garden, 2:30pm. To find the garden head down to the Home Ground Cafe on the Village Green. Diagonally across the Village Green field is the Urban Garden. Take a short walk around the blue walking track to the other side and you have arrived! If you do have trouble locating the garden the team at Home Ground will be able to help you out.
Come first to our Producers Picnic 12pm-2pm and stick around for this seed saving workshop.
We can't wait to see you there!

We would like to cordially invite you to a free and fun workshop where we will learn the ancient art of sourdough baking - you can take some sourdough starter home with you to nourish and practice. As part of the workshop there will be a bread tasting session (bring your favourite bread topping along) and a gentle introduction into “Beyond Growth - a different way of living that is inherently more meaningful, just, and sustainable."
This is for:
Anyone who loves community and is curious, anyone who is interested in sourdough baking and/or keen to learn about life and degrowth in a hands-on, relatable and non-academic way.
Date / Time / Location:
July 25th; 4pm to 5:45pm; Morven Brown building, room 354
On the day please:
• Wear comfortable clothes and covered shoes that can handle a bit of flour sprinkling
• Bring a medium sized bowl with a cover/lid (or Tupperware with lid) – this will hold the dough that you make in the workshop so that you can then bake your bread at home (it needs several hours to “ferment” before its ready to be baked)
• Bring a bread topping of your choosing, if possible
Please note that RSVP is necessary since the event is limited to 10 participants — so please only RSVP if you are really going to show up! Please RSVP to Oliver: [email protected]
We are looking forward to this workshop.
With Warmth and Gratitude -

If you haven't volunteered at our working bee before, we'll be triply excited :)! No food-growing experience necessary. This is a chance to share knowledge, learn from each other, and grow community, as well as food!

Great working bee today at The Cage garden. Thanks to first-time volunteer Nara, who helped tidy up and plant out this season's (Marrai'gang/Autumn) crops. And thanks to Oliver, who shared a delicious home-made loaf of rye sourdough with the whole crew. If you're interested in volunteering with watering, future working bees, or any other way with the garden, please message us :).
The next UNSW Urban Growers working bee is scheduled for Tue 20 September, 1-3PM. This is an all-volunteer event for any students and staff who are interested in getting together and growing food on campus at the very urban community food garden we have started behind UNSW Barker St Carpark. We have some seedlings to go in, kindly donated by the School of BEES. If you are able to come, we would love to see you there at The Cage garden, even if it is only for a portion of the time.
