ISLAMIC PERSPECTIVE OF How to Win Friends and Influence People

How to Win Friends and Influence People is a self-help book written by Dale Carnegie, published in 1936. Over 30 million copies have been sold world-wide, making it one of the best-selling books of all time. In 2011, it was number 19 on Time Magazine's list of the 100 most influential books.[1]

In 1934, Leon Shimkin of the publishing firm Simon & Schuster took one of Carnegie's 14-week courses; afterward, Shimkin persuaded Carnegie to let a stenographer take notes from the course to be revised for publication. The original book contained colorful anecdotes and insightful wisdom, and gave instruction in handling people, "winning" friends, bringing people to your way of thinking, being a great leader, and successfully navigating home life. Carnegie combined age-old truisms with the emerging field of psychology to present a handbook in human relations which was interesting and accessible. Emphasizing using others' egotistical tendencies to one's advantage, Carnegie maintained that success could be found by charm, appreciation, and personality. The book sold exceptionally well from the start, going through 17 editions in its first year alone.

In 1981, a revised edition containing updated language and anecdotes was released.[2] The revised edition reduced the number of sections from six to four, eliminating sections on effective business letters and improving marital satisfaction.

In 2011, a third edition was released, How to Win Friends and Influence People in the Digital Age. Written by Dale Carnegie & Associates, it applies Carnegie's prescription for relationship and business success to the digital age.[1]

The art of interacting with people as deducted from a study of our beloved Prophet Muhammad’s (peace be upon him) life.
– A product of more than twenty years of research.

Enjoy Your Life by Sheikh Muhammad Al-Arifi is a book centered on developing and perfecting interpersonal skills based on Islamic Principles; whether that is with parents, children or students, friends, etc. This book is primarily based on the life of our beloved Prophet Muhammad (Peace be upon him). There are also numerous incidents from history and the author’s personal experiences. So, it’s not just a practical self-help book but it’s also a good lesson from history!

Enjoy Your Life by Sheikh Dr. Muhammad ‘Abd Al-Rahaman Al-‘ArifiSheikh’s Arifi was inspired by Dale Carnegie’s book “How to Win Friends and Influence People”. He read this book when he was 17 and later realized that Carnegie himself did not benefit from his advice as he chose to end his own life. The Sheikh then began researching on the same subject from the life of Prophet Muhammad (pbuh) & Islamic History and compiled this book.

Enjoy Your life is a product of 20 years of research and as the author says “…I wrote [this book] with my ink blended with blood; I poured my soul and squeezed out my memories as I wrote these lines.”

The main theme of this book is – interacting with others in the best possible way. Furthermore, it is a practical guide to winning the hearts of those you know in order to benefit, correct and guide them. After reading this book I reckon the author achieved the goal he was trying to accomplish. I personally have changed due to the many advices contained in it Alhamdulilah; I also have shared what I learned with others (I kind of talk non-stop about it to friends sometimes!).

Prophet (pbuh) showed the best of character, manners and communication skills with children, family, companions, women and even adversaries! There are many events narrated from the life of our beloved Prophet (pbuh) his companions & various icons from history. Reading this has increased my knowledge about their lives and character & my heart has developed even more love and respect for them.

Here are some of my favorite quotes from the book:
“Success is not to discover what others like, it is to acquire and practice the skills that help one gain their love.“

“Bravery is not to persist in your errors, but to acknowledge that you are wrong, and not to repeat the error again.“

“When people realize that we pay attention to their good actions just as we pay attention to their bad actions, they appreciate our advice.“

There is a chapter titled ‘With Women‘. This chapter discusses how our Beloved Prophet (pbuh) dealt with women. It’s one of my favorite chapter from the book! Here are some short quotes from it:

“Glory be to Allah who granted the Prophet, Salalahu Alayhi wa Salaam, the quality of gentleness and leniency, even when dealing with personal problems! I myself have exercised gentleness and emotional skills with my daughter and wife, and prior to that with my mother and sister, and I have found it to be very effective indeed. No man honors a woman except an honorable one, and no one dishonors a woman except a mean person. A point to consider: A woman can be patient with her husband’s poverty, unattractiveness and busy schedule, but she cannot be patient with his rude behavior.”

I would highly recommend this book! Whether you choose to read each chapter of this book in order or you are amongst those who like to skip around, you will still find this book to be very beneficial Insha’Allah.

Although I hope every Muslim purchases this book, I would suggest Enjoy Your Life especially for Imams, teachers and parents.

So, are you thinking of getting a gift for your Brother or Sister? This is the perfect item to include! Or just let them borrow it after you finish. :)

And remember, if they benefit from the advice and act upon it, you earn reward insha’Allah!

Brothers and Sisters, you should really add this book to your library. It’s a must-have, can’t-do-without. It will benefit you for many years to come, Insha’Allah.

But do not take my word for it. Discover for yourself why so many are in love with this book! :)

I wish there was an Enjoy Your Life – Part 2! Till then I will continue to re-read the chapters and implement them insha’Allah.
