Radiation‐Associated Internal Lymphoedema and Swallowing Impairment in Head and Neck Cancer: Insights From Imaging and Manometry 31/05/2026

Check out ! This research explores the role of CT imaging in detecting internal lymphoedema following radiotherapy for head and neck cancer. Swallowing structures were contoured on the CT simulation, the last cone-beam CT and the three-month PET/CT scan for 26 H&N patients. Changes in the dimensions of swallowing structures were correlated with swallowing outcomes via linear regression models. Persistent swelling was seen at the epiglottis (0.77cm3, 95% CI [0.50, 1.04], p < 0.0001), base of tongue (6.92 cm3, [4.82, 9.03], p = 0.0001) and middle pharyngeal constrictors (2.77cm3, [1.63, 3.91], p = 0.0001). Total volume of all structures at three months was positively associated with Sydney Swallow Questionnaire (SSQ) scores (β = 31.198, [12.521, 49.875], p = 0.005). Radiation‐Associated Internal Lymphoedema and Swallowing Impairment in Head and Neck Cancer: Insights From Imaging and Manometry Introduction Lymphoedema is a significant complication following head and neck cancer (HNC) treatment. We examined the use of computed tomography (CT) to detect internal lymphoedema (IL) based on se...

New in ! Research from New Zealand highlights a missed opportunity in cardiovascular prevention. Of 1602 patients admitted with acute MI, 16.8% had a prior non-cardiac NGTCT. CAC was reported in 70 reports (26%), with visual severity grading provided in 14 (20%), none included a management recommendation. Read more: https://ow.ly/6HAb50YYaqJ

New in JMIRO! Emerging evidence of benefits of EVT in later stages of infarct have raised questions about the requirement of perfusion CTs. This study evaluates non-perfusion CT imaging for decision-making for endovascular thrombectomy for large vessel occlusion. High interobserver agreement was observed for LVO detection and IR referral and > 90% accuracy in LVO detection. Read more: https://ow.ly/Jmop50YUOiY

This study evaluated embolisation outcomes for renal angiomyolipomas across different embolic agents.

Key findings:
• 91% technical success
• Mean tumour size reduction of 1.75 cm
• Liquid embolic agents achieved the greatest tumour reduction and 0% re-intervention rate
• Coil-only embolisation showed inferior outcomes

This study evaluated the impact of radiology clinical decision support (eCDS) in the emergency department, analysing 23,067 CT requests over 12 months.

Implementation of eCDS was associated with:
• 8.2% of imaging requests modified
• 9.1% reduction in CT utilisation
• ~4.7 tonnes of CO₂ reduction

These findings support eCDS as a tool to improve imaging appropriateness and sustainability.
