Your partner shouldn’t be your whole world. That’s what my Mum always told me and she was right (of course 🤣)
They should be part of a full, rich life you already have not the entire thing. Why? Because it’s too much pressure on one person and, it leaves less of you in the relationship too.
I’ve been thinking about this a lot lately, because the same principle applies to work.
We’ve been conditioned to believe we should pour everything:
One job.
One identity.
One title.
And that if we don’t, we’re somehow less focused, less committed, less “serious.”
But I don’t think that’s true anymore.
I started building a portfolio career around 4 years ago, and it changed everything.
Now I don’t just have one job that defines me I have multiple strands of work that reflect different parts of who I am and instead of diluting things, it’s deepened them.
More perspective.
More creativity.
More energy.
There’s something really powerful about not putting all your eggs (or your identity) in one basket. Because when everything depends on one thing working, the pressure is enormous.
But when your life and work are diversified you get to breathe a little.
You get to experiment.
You get to expand.
You get to be more of yourself in different rooms.
And ironically?
You become better at all of it.
I like to think I’m now:
💍 monogamous in love
💼 diversified in career
And that balance feels a lot more honest for how I want to live now.
Have you ever thought about what a portfolio version of your career could look like?
