OUTDOOR EDUCATION | A Week of Experiential Learning
It’s worth being reminded that Mosman Prep has always valued adventure in the outdoors and has been committed to going above and beyond in providing boys with challenging outdoor pursuits.
In an era dominated by sitting still and managing increasingly structured schedules, primary school boys face a unique developmental challenge. The modern world often asks young boys to regulate quietly inside a traditional classroom setting. Yet, research in child psychology and social development highlights a timeless truth: young boys thrive when given the space to explore, take managed risks, and connect with nature.
School camps and outdoor experiential learning programs are far more than just fun trips—they are essential environments for developing emotional resilience, self-reliance, and social intelligence. To wrap up Term 3, our boys headed outdoors across three incredible camp experiences:
⛺ Year 3 & 4 Crusader Camp (Lake Macquarie): Bushwalking, wide games, archery, group challenges and initiative activities, orienteering, sailing, rafting, canoeing, navigation, low ropes, reptile show, bush cooking, catapults, and Christian discovery.
🌊 Year 5 Coffs Harbour Adventure: Adventure course, surfing, canoeing, Aboriginal preschool visit, and cultural tour with local Indigenous students participating. The students raise money to buy books, sporting gear, appliances, and other resources for an Aboriginal preschool in the area.
🌄 Year 6 Red Centre Expedition: A 6-day tent camping adventure exploring Standley Chasm, Simpsons Gap, Kings Canyon Rim, Kata Tjuta, and Uluru, complete with desert cultural walks and traditional workshops.
Apart from being a great deal of fun, these trips develop community amongst the staff teams; powerful life skills, values and attitudes in students; positive connections with Aboriginal communities and heritage; and an awareness of the environment.
