Exam Tip:
Always ask yourself the following question: What is the author’s purpose in writing this stem?
Do they want to detail their observations? Do they want to entertain the audience? Do they want to expose a flaw in society? Do they want to encourage/discourage a certain behavior? Do they want to display a trend (or trends)?
Asking yourself these questions really helps in my experience eliminate blatantly wrong answer options.
Tim's Gamsat Tutoring
Specialist GAMSAT S1 Tutor
Hello Everyone!
I’m Tim, and welcome to Tim’s GAMSAT Tutoring. I scored 74 and then 75 in section 1 of the GAMSAT ( March 2022 and March 2023, respectively). Additionally, I did this despite having a science background. I am now offering my services as a tutor and am looking to help others take on the often dreaded first section of the GAMSAT.
Don’t worry; with patience and hard work, you can do well in S1 regardless of your university major/degree.
Preparation Tip:
When answering questions, it is often just as important to know why specific answers are wrong as it is to know why a particular answer is correct. This approach helps one better understand the reasoning processes employed by ACER and consequently better prepares one for the GAMSAT. Additionally, such a strategy and approach increases the number of practice questions available, as suddenly, that 1 MC question becomes 4.
Tackling Challenging Vocabulary:
When sitting the GAMSAT, you will definitely come across words you do not know. There is no way to get around this fact. Diligent reading in the months before sitting the test will not dramatically improve your vocabulary.
So, what can you do?
Look at the word and its parts(e.g. prefixes). Does it sound like any words you know? Have you heard the word before? And in what context? What known words surround this unknown word?
Asking yourself these questions may allow you to figure out a working definition for the word in question.
In my experience, most unknown words ( approx. 70%) can be figured out using the above method.
Give it a go and tell me what you think!
Exam Tip:
Many MC answers contain two ideas or descriptive words (e.g. Happy and Conscientious). Both words/ideas have to be correct for that answer option to be correct. Often, several possible answer options begin with a correct and/or suitable word/idea. The differentiating factor between the answers is hence often the second idea/word. So please, always look at that second idea/word. This exam tip may sound trivial; however, its importance cannot be overstated, as many people fail to consider it.

I thought this post should be about one common misconception post people have about S1.
Most people believe that as the GAMSAT is a test for aspiring doctors, only “complicated” answers can be correct. The truth is that for about 90% of the time, it could not be further from the truth. The correct answer can usually be found in the stem, and so there is no need to extrapolate/infer to find the correct answer. If a potential answer does not match the stem, it is almost definitely wrong.
Hi Everybody!
My apologies for not posting for a while. I am going to try post more regularly from now on. Also, if you have any questions relating to S1, please ask them! It doesn’t matter if you use my services or not, I’ll try to answer to the best of my ability. There is way too much misinformation out there about S1. So I want to clear some things up. Ask Away!

I have been asked a few times whether one needs to read more to prepare for S1.
Most people give the very vague advice that you need to read to improve your vocabulary. Garbage! There are so many words in the English language, and you do not have time to learn a significant number of words in the several months you have to prepare for GAMSAT. You should also understand that GAMSAT is not an English test, and usually (>90% of the time) you can guess what a word means from the context of the stem/question/answer through either the process of elimination or through logical thinking.
The only reason I believe you should read more in preparation for GAMSAT is to increase your reading speed (something that can be done in several months). Read sources you do not normally read. Aim for both speed and comprehension. With practice comes improvement.
Anyway, that is my opinion. I hope it helps in some shape or form.
