Educate Up was founded by Madonna, our teacher who has worked in primary, secondary, and tertiary education in Australia.

She began teaching literacy in remote Aboriginal communities where she developed award-winning reading and writing programs. She then studied the theory of literacy acquisition at Sydney University. This introduced her to extensive research that is traditionally outside regular teacher training. She then initiated targeted programs in Sydney high schools. This work raised the performance of thousands of students, many of whom had shown no growth since early primary school.

While implementing these programs, she developed processes to support schools to find the appropriate balance between the demands of the curriculum and the need for students to acquire the skills for learning. These processes involve whole school data analysis, assessment, professional development in relevant theory, coaching in targeted instruction and the building teams around data to support student growth. School performance improves when schools fully commit to improving the results of underperforming students.

Underachievement is a major educational problem in Australia, and it exists across all educational sectors, public, private, and independent. Madonna believes that with better instruction these underachieving students can do better, profit from their education and have more successful lives.

She is a consultant with Learning Difficulties Australia (LDA), a reading specialist with SPELD, and a member of the Learning Difficulties Coalition.
