Good morning techheads and students of voice... BMVC looks a little different this year! I’m moving away from the weekly model and towards a flexible workshop / Masterclass / consult model.

Today I asked students to submit Live performances of Artists who inspire them and to break down some vocal techniques used. I HAD to share this beautiful video that came through. This week was a trip down research lane... after another teacher consulted me about the definition and contemporary practice of Vocal registers I went back into the archives to bring up my old Postgraduate research project.

Did you know that the debate on how registers are labelled, defined and felt has been raging for centuries? In early Operatic pedagogy some teachers believed there was only one vocal register!

The good news is that Science has come a long way since then and we are now able to see with much more clarity where and how the voice changes. However... the research is ongoing. (How exciting!)

My job as a teacher is to help you develop an understanding in theory and practice of the strengths and limitations of each register. When each register is well developed and your technique is grounded, you get to enjoy a whole new dynamic and expressive palate! And isn’t that the most beautiful part of our Art?
