✨Motherhood✨

The social construction of Motherhood implies perfection is reflective of performance or that how your child behaves, acts or sleeps stems from your own capabilities.

Just because a child behaves in what is known to be “undesirable”, “disruptive” and “non-compliant” shouldn’t equate a Mother’s ability to Mother.

Any Mother that we look too may appear as they have it all together, but failure is inevitable when your constantly striving to be perfect. This societal narrative of perfect Motherhood has been created through a social process with unachievable standards.

This story written by my dear friend is raw, heartfelt, inspiring and demonstrates that expectation to meet those high standards of an idealised Mother and how it connects your sense of worthiness and value to Motherhood.

Being a Mother can mean accepting your limitations and wanting to grow from them. Being a Mother can mean understanding that in fact there is no such thing as a perfect or ideal mother. Being a Mother can be just knowing you are enough for your child.

Please Mums; you are enough, you are strong, you are worthy. Mothers are not the containers to hold everyone else’s stuff. You are allowed to fail, feel anger & show vulnerability.

Developing a sense of belonging on the wild ride of Motherhood is fundamental to a Mother’s wellbeing. Mothers need to be encouraged, not shamed.

✨A baby’s journey from womb to world✨

In the womb your little babe had every single need met by being in that supportive environment & the soothing nature of the movements you made everyday. Your little one was fed without too much effort and was super snug, warm and secure as they floated in the dark amniotic fluids.

After birth your little one experiences big sensory changes, which are dramatic for a newborn baby. Those many months with darkness and muffled sounds have come to an end and bright lights, clearer sounds and unpredictable physical connection arises. This tiny human is discovering how to communicate their hunger and need for comfort with their cries and making sense of their bodies as they startle when they stretch out their limbs.

This world is full of stimulation and it can become a sensory overload for their developing brains.

Signs of overstimulation can be observed as:
✨Being cranky or tired
✨Seem upset or turn their heads away
✨Clench their fists, wave their arms or kick
✨Cry, especially if the overstimulation has gone on for a long time.

If you observe that your little one is overwhelmed with sensory input, take them to a quiet & less bright space where you can create a sense of calm and stillness.
These tools can be very soothing:
✨Skin to skin contact
✨Rhythmic rocking motions, cuddle or pat with a shhh sound
✨Wrapping/swaddling
✨If still stimulated place bub in a cot & try the pat with a shushing sound

Lots of love,
Ella xx

✨Children need many opportunities for play✨

I know it seems like an obvious statement to make but it’s important to highlight.

When children are awake, rested and feeling rejuvenated from their sleep this is an opportunity to engage, connect, play and enjoy just BEING.

Supporting children to “be” allows them to explore and make discoveries about their world.

These special moments allow children to be creative, develop their imagination, cognition, gross/fine motor skills and emotional/social strength.

As parents, educators and caregivers we can encourage this time for children in age appropriate ways and incorporate varying resources that reflect their current interests, abilities and developmental needs. Also by joining in and providing big blocks of uninterrupted play we can extend their learning and deepen our bond with these beautiful little people.

What do your little ones love to play with?

✨ TIRED SIGNS ✨

Every child is their own unique little person and it’s important to note that tired signs may present differently but also important to know what YOUR child’s tired signs are.

This can be practiced by being attuned to your child, so that their needs are being met. In this case it would be understanding what their sleep cues look like.

As adults we don’t really like staying awake when all we want is to just sleep. Instead of waiting until your child is over tired, beginning a wind down ritual for sleep is important as soon as those sleepy cues appear.

Now what can these look like?
🌙 Eye rubbing
🌙 Making jerky movements (in smaller infants)
🌙 Red under the eyes or a red appearance on the eye brows
🌙 Ear and hair pulling
🌙 Grizzling/ crying
🌙 Clenching fists
🌙 Less social/ vocal
🌙 Yawning
🌙 Suddenly hungry & want to suckle but will quickly fall asleep

Sometimes when this window of opportunity is missed, infants/children can become increasingly grumpy and harder to settle.

Each child will develop their very own mix of tired signs and will not display each of these cues every time that they are tired. Take time to get to know your little one by being present and using trial and error to discover what works and what your child is communicating with you!

What do you notice when your little one is tired? I’d love to know about it!

Hello again 🤎

I just wanted to introduce myself a bit more!
My name is Ella and I am currently working in a beautiful Early Childhood Service and have been for the past 6 years.

I begun my journey in to Early Childhood Education & Care after years of babysitting with my best friend and realising how I loved being connected to children and their families.

I have loved watching children grow, develop and thrive. It has been an amazing journey to see these little people start walking, talking and such an amazing opportunity to be there to watch them graduate and start primary school, which has filled me with so much joy. The relationships that I have built with the children and their families are so special and I will be forever grateful for that!

I became curious with how I could extend my knowledge and further educate myself and a Sleep Course has tied in perfectly with this, so that I can continue doing what I am so passionate about, which is supporting families & children.

I can’t wait to continue my studies and become a Certified Sleep Consultant!

Lots of love,
Ella xx
