Not all 20 books have to be in English.

The NSW Premier’s Reading Challenge 2026 closes on Friday 18 September — 45 days from today.

Here is the part most parents miss. Books chosen from the PRC list are read in English, but the 10 Personal Choice books can be read in the language you speak at home (Yr 3 and above).

· K–2 — 30 books in total (20 from the list + 10 Personal Choice). They may be read aloud to your child.
· Yr 3+ — 20 books in total (10 from the list + 10 Personal Choice), read independently.

From here, 20 books is about 3 a week. Still on zero isn’t too late — it’s a starting line.

The official booklist is published free by the NSW Department of Education, sorted by challenge level:
online.education.nsw.gov.au/prc

Send this to the parent whose child registered back in February and is still on 0.

Best English chapter books for upper primary readers (550L–720L)

If your child’s reading level hasn’t moved all year, the problem usually isn’t
vocabulary — it’s that the book never gave them a reason to care. These four
build comprehension the way NAPLAN and OC reading actually test it: through
stakes, not word lists.

Read them in this order:
1. Fish in a Tree — 550L / AR 3.7
2. Holes — 660L / AR 4.6
3. How to Steal a Dog — 700L / AR 4.0
4. A Long Walk to Water — 720L / AR 5.0

How do I help my child actually remember what they study?

Here’s the 4-step method we teach: 1) explain it out loud (the moment they can’t say it, you’ve found the gap), 2) summarise the whole idea in one picture, 3) write a chapter summary — key sentence, support, example, 4) read with a highlighter. It’s the same skill NAPLAN and OC-test questions quietly reward.

How to teach lines of symmetry to primary kids — without the tears.

The trap on every NSW maths worksheet: a diagonal cuts a rectangle into two equal halves, but it’s NOT a line of symmetry. The fix is the folding test — if the shape folds like a mirror and hides itself perfectly, that fold is the axis. Don‘t point at the answer; ask: ”Do the edges hide each other?“
