🎸 **STUDENT SHOUT-OUT — BJORN** 🎸

A massive shout-out to **Bjorn**, who has taken on the challenge of preparing Steve Vai’s **“Die to Live”** for an assessment.

This is not a simple piece of music. It demands technique, control, phrasing, timing, dynamics and, above all, patience.

What I really want to acknowledge is Bjorn’s willingness to keep working at it — going back over sections, identifying what isn’t quite right, refining the details and putting in the time required to make the whole performance sit properly.

And a huge **thank you to Bjorn for allowing me to share some of that process**.

Because this is the part of learning an instrument that people rarely see.

On performance day, an audience sees a few minutes of music.

What they **don’t** see are the hours spent isolating a difficult passage.

They don’t see the repetitions.

The mistakes.

The adjustments.

The frustration.

The slow tempos.

The tiny improvements.

The constant process of asking:

**“How can I make this better?”**

That work may never be seen by anybody outside the practice room.

But you hear it when the player finally steps onto the stage.

That’s musicianship.

That’s the process.

And Bjorn deserves enormous credit for committing to it.

Keep going. 🤘

Harmonic and Melodic Intervals

The notes do not have to change for the interval type to change.
Play two notes at the same time and you are hearing a harmonic interval. Play the same two notes one after another and you are hearing a melodic interval. The distance remains identical; only the way the notes are presented changes.
Try the C-E major 3rd shown here. Strum the notes together as a dyad, then play them separately. Listen for the same relationship in both forms.
Save this exercise for your next ear-training session.

Here’s one of the real mind-openers of the guitar:

The same pitch can exist in multiple locations on the fretboard.

You aren't always hearing six different notes just because you're playing them on six different strings.

The guitar gives you overlapping pitch locations — and that gives you options.

Different strings.
Different positions.
Different tonal character.
Same musical pitch.

This is one of the reasons learning octave relationships is so powerful.

👽🎸 AGS Fretboard Fix 08 — One E4. Six Locations.

The guitar isn’t six independent strings.

It’s one interconnected musical system.

What Is an Interval?

Intervals can sound complicated because they are often introduced as a collection of abstract names and numbers. Strip all of that away and the basic idea is simple: an interval is the musical distance between two notes.
On the guitar, each fret space represents one semitone. Move from one fret space to the next and you have changed the pitch by the smallest standard chromatic step on the fretboard.
Start with the distance. The interval name comes next.
Save this post and test the idea from several different starting notes.

SOUNDCHECK ANSWER 01

The answer is 2 — A minor.

The defining note is C natural.

C natural is the ♭3—the note that creates the darker minor quality.

Try this on your guitar:

Play A major, then A minor. Listen carefully as C♯ moves down one semitone to C natural.

One note. A completely different character.

Did you get it right?

And here comes the G–B tuning shift again.

When your two-string octave relationship crosses that tuning change, Formula 4 needs adjusting.

The solution:

+3 FRETS • +2 STRINGS

This is AGS Octave Formula 5.

Once you understand why these shapes change, the fretboard stops looking inconsistent.

It becomes predictable.

That’s the whole point of the five formulas.

SOUNDCHECK SUNDAY 01

Turn your sound on. The root note is A.

Does this chord sound:

1 — A major: brighter and happier
2 — A minor: darker and sadder

Listen twice, trust your ears and comment 1 or 2.

No guitar first—answer by sound alone.

The answer drops tomorrow.

🔥 **STUDENT SHOUT-OUT — DYLAN LIVE!** 🔥

A massive shout-out to **Dylan and his band, Mockers & Hypocrites**, who hit the stage at **Deadset on August 22**, supporting the incredible **Rose Carleo**.

There’s nothing better than seeing young musicians getting out there, playing live, building experience and putting all those hours of practice into a real performance.

Huge congratulations to Dylan and the whole band on a killer opportunity — keep playing, keep creating, and keep pushing forward. 🤘

**This is what it’s all about.**
