❓ Can Onshore or Offshore Self-Employed Applicants Receive a Positive Skills Assessment?
✅ Yes. In general, being self-employed does not prevent an applicant from receiving a suitable skills assessment outcome.
This may apply to:
🇦🇺 Onshore applicants: Individuals operating a genuine business or providing independent services under an Australian Business Number (ABN).
🌏 Offshore applicants: Individuals who are self-employed or operate a registered business under the relevant laws of their country.
The assessing authority will generally consider:
✔️ Whether the applicant’s duties align with the nominated occupation
✔️ Whether the business was legally operating
✔️ Whether the claimed work experience can be independently verified
✔️ Whether sufficient financial, business and supporting evidence is provided
Supporting evidence may include:
📌 Business registration documents
📌 Tax records
📌 Invoices and contracts
📌 Bank statements
📌 Client references
📌 An accountant’s letter
📌 Business activity records
If the relevant requirements are met, onshore or offshore self-employment experience may be accepted as suitable employment.
⚠️ Important: Holding an ABN alone does not establish genuine self-employment or guarantee a positive outcome. Every application is assessed individually according to the relevant assessing authority’s requirements.

Audiologist Skills Assessment for Australian Migration – Complete Guide - Number One Service
What does an Audiologist do in Australia?

Yes, you can do a Skills Assessment without Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) — if you already hold a formal qualification that matches your nominated occupation. Most assessing bodies accept recognised qualifications such as certificates, diplomas, or degrees, provided they are relevant and meet the Australian standards.
RPL is generally used when an applicant does not have a formal qualification but has extensive work experience in their field. Through RPL, your existing skills and knowledge are assessed by a Registered Training Organisation (RTO) and converted into an equivalent Australian qualification.
So, if you already hold a suitable qualification — especially one from Australia or an overseas institution recognised by the assessing authority — you don’t need to go through the RPL process. You can apply for Skills Assessment directly using your qualification and work experience.
However, in cases where your qualification is not closely related to your nominated occupation, or if it is not recognised as equivalent to the required Australian level, you may be asked to provide additional evidence — or RPL may still be recommended as a solution.
If you're unsure whether your qualification is suitable or whether RPL is needed in your case, it's always wise to consult a migration agent or authorised representative. They can assess your background and guide you on the most suitable pathway for a successful Skills Assessment.

A successful Skills Assessment depends not only on your work experience but also on the quality and accuracy of the documents you submit.
Some of the most common issues we see include:
❌ Generic reference letters
❌ Employment duties that do not align with your nominated occupation
❌ Unverified or insufficient payslip evidence
These documentation errors can lead to processing delays, requests for additional information, or an unsuccessful assessment outcome.
At Number One Service, we provide professional guidance to ensure your employment evidence is accurate, compliant, and tailored to the requirements of the relevant assessing authority.
