At ‘Gabi’s Kindy’, four children worked collaboratively to design and build their very own city. Through rich discussion and shared decision-making, they explored the essential elements of town planning - shops, hotels, roads, fences, hospitals, helicopter pads and even water systems! 🏠

This child-directed project unfolded over uninterrupted time, allowing ideas to evolve, roles to emerge, and thinking to deepen.

It was a beautiful example of collaborative play, problem solving and children bringing their big ideas to life! 💡

Nature pedagogy is more than outdoor play - it’s learning through and with nature. When children explore gardens, care for animals, and connect with the natural world, they develop curiosity, confidence, empathy, and a sense of belonging. Every leaf turned and seed planted helps children grow - inside and out. 💚

At Lauren Clark’s service, children are encouraged to build a deep connection with their environment. Through caring for the resident chickens and embracing spontaneous moments of nature discovery, they learn respect, responsibility, and appreciation for the world around them.

Caption: Spring has sprung at Lisa C.’s service! 🌱💚

The children have been engaging in meaningful, hands-on learning experiences. Lisa has been guiding explorations of the silkworm life cycle and supporting the children in planting a variety of fruits and vegetables. These activities foster a deeper connection to nature and promote curiosity and environmental awareness.

This aligns with the EYLF Learning Outcome 2: ‘Children are connected with and contribute to their world,’ particularly through their engagement with natural environments and sustainability practices.

Children’s rights are not privileges – they are fundamental human rights that must guide every decision we make in early education.

The United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child (UNCRC) makes clear that children have the right to be heard, to feel safe, to thrive in supportive environments, and to be treated with dignity and respect. These rights are embedded in Australia’s National Quality Framework, which means they should be visible across every aspect of early childhood education and care.

For educators, upholding children’s rights is about:
✔ creating safe and inclusive environments
✔ listening to and valuing children’s voices
✔ reflecting regularly on practice
✔ continuing to deepen our understanding through professional learning

Our child protection ebook unpacks these principles, explores common misconceptions about children’s rights, and provides practical strategies for embedding them into everyday practice.

✨ Meet Honey the chicken! 🐓 A much-loved resident at Lauren’s service .

During Book Week, Honey joined in the fun as the children read “Chicken Divas”, adding a touch of real-life excitement and joy to the story experience. The children delighted in connecting the book to their everyday environment, fostering curiosity, imagination, and a sense of wonder.

💡 EYLF Connection: Engaging with animals nurtures children’s respect for living things and their natural world (Outcome 2: Children are connected with and contribute to their world). Honey’s presence enriches the children’s learning by strengthening their sense of belonging, care, and responsibility for the environment around them.

Today is National Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Children’s Day. The ‘Little Footsteps, Big Future’ initiative invites educators to reflect on how they nurture children's voices, dreams, and connections to culture, community, and Country.

Take the time to reflect with your teams on how your service empowers children to shape their own path.

Loose parts play using natural resources opens the door to endless creativity!

Sticks, stones, leaves, shells, seed pods - nature offers a rich, open-ended invitation for children to explore, build, imagine, and create.

By using what’s around them, children connect to the environment, develop problem-solving skills, and engage in meaningful, self-directed play.

“too many loose parts can be overwhelming and overstimulating - too few can frustrate children and limit their opportunities for play. The rule of thumb is to have more of fewer materials. Having a lot of the same material is better than little bits of many different items.”
(Loose Parts 4: Inspiring 21st Century Learning, Daly & Beloglovsky, p. 91)

During last week’s Educator Forum, we invited educators to reflect on the meaning of child safety by contributing to a Word Cloud three words that resonated most deeply with them. The responses were thoughtful and insightful, capturing the core values and commitments that underpin their daily practice. This poster presents those words visually, with the size of each word representing how frequently it was mentioned. The most common response? Protection.
