This week, we celebrated NAIDOC week with a range of fun and meaningful activities! The children made damper and enjoyed it with native jams like Kakadu plum strawberry, finger lime raspberry, and lemon myrtle butter. They also engaged in art and craft and showed their creativity with dot painting, yarn-wrapped boomerangs, and their own Warnayarra Rainbow Snake craft. We also made Aboriginal flags and tried making aboriginal symbols. We also read beautiful stories including Somebody’s Land, Ceremony, Waru and Dhangal visit the Torres Strait Island, and Warnayarra the Rainbow Snake.

We celebrated Harmony Day by welcoming our friends and reading a selection of books that celebrate our uniqueness and differences. We read It’s Okay to Be Different and Whoever You Are, which highlighted the importance of diversity and the unique qualities that make each individual special. After the stories, we continued our celebration by painting orange flowers to represent diversity. We also created handprints in various colours, symbolising the many vibrant identities in our community. To top off the morning, we enjoyed a delightful orange-themed platter for morning tea, which included nectarine, rock melon, carrots, tomatoes, apricots, Twisties, and orange jelly.

We celebrated Dental Health week at Little Academy and we had the privilege of inviting dentists Alex and Allen to enlighten us about oral hygiene and the importance of maintaining healthy eating habits. They showed us a variety of foods, encouraging us to identify those that are beneficial for our dental health. Our dentists explained the importance of taking steps to take care of our teeth and gums to keep our teeth healthy and smile for life. The children were gifted a soft bristle toothbrush and stickers. Our friendly dentists demonstrated to the children the correct brushing techniques. The children demonstrated a sense of responsibility as they practised brushing their teeth. They showed understanding of how their actions affect their well-being, thereby building autonomy and a sense of self.

Winter has well and truly hit us here in Sydney and so today at Little Academy we started our Winter menu.
Our first new lunch on the menu is baked lemon myrtle chicken with vegetables and a wholemeal bread roll. The chicken and vegetables warmed us up on this chilly day.
The Rainbow Room children served themselves from platters placed in the middle of the table which gave them autonomy on the choices of they eat and how much they eat.
The Troubadour Room children were also are given the platters as well as child size knives to cut their chicken. This experience provides opportunity for the children to do task independently and support their fine motor skills.
