UNSW researchers have set a new world record for kesterite solar cell efficiency - a type of cell that could be a long-term, sustainable and cost-effective add-on or replacement for silicon-based panels. ☀️
The team, led by Scientia Professor Xiaojing Hao achieved an efficiency of 13.2% - beating the previous record of 11.4%.
Synthesised kesterite (known as CZTS) is a promising material for future generations of solar cells, however, its efficiency has been hampered by the number of defects created during production.
Now, UNSW researchers say they have helped to solve this problem by heat-treating the solar cell device in a hydrogen-containing atmosphere.
