For many Indian engineering graduates, a six-figure salary in Silicon Valley represents the ultimate goal. However, the experience of 29-year-old Tanvi Pisal, a Pune native now working as a UX designer with Apple, offers a more complex picture of life in the US.

In an interview with Hindustan Times, Pisal said that despite moving from a starting salary of Rs 3.5 lakh in Pune to a compensation package exceeding Rs 1 crore in California, her life was marked more by uncertainty than comfort.

An MIT professor taught the same math course for 61 years. On the day of his final lecture, students from every country in the world showed up online to watch.

His name is Gilbert Strang. The course is Linear Algebra. And there is a very good chance that if you have ever used a smartphone, been recommended a video, or interacted with any AI system, your life has already been shaped by what he taught.

Every machine learning engineer, every data scientist, every programmer who actually understands how AI works learned the math from this one man. Most of them never set foot on MIT's campus. They just opened a free YouTube playlist and let him teach.

When MIT put lectures online in 2002, most professors resisted. They worried it would make their classrooms irrelevant. Strang did not hesitate for a second. He said his mission was to open mathematics to students everywhere. He filmed everything and gave it away for free.

What made him different was not just generosity. It was how he taught. He never said "obviously" or "trivially" because he knew exactly what those words do to a student who is one step behind. He said please and thank you in every lecture. He paused mid-equation to ask if anyone was lost. He treated 19-year-olds learning math for the first time the way he treated his own colleagues.
For 61 years.

His final lecture ended with a standing ovation from a packed auditorium. He looked genuinely confused by the applause. Then he smiled, waved them off, and walked out.

His comment under the YouTube video of that lecture was four sentences. He said teaching had been a wonderful life. No farewell speech. No legacy management.
20 million views. Zero ego.

The course is still free on MIT OpenCourseWare. Every lecture, every exam, every solution. One click away.

Most people will never open it.

Following the safe return of the Artemis II crew on April 10, 2026, a wave of public discussion emerged regarding the standardized pay structure for NASA astronauts. Despite the extreme risks associated with a lunar flyby, crew members such as Christina Koch are compensated as federal civil servants within the General Schedule pay scale, typically ranging from GS-13 to GS-15 levels. This system results in an approximate annual salary of $152,258, which remains fixed regardless of whether an astronaut is on the ground or in deep space.

Netizens expressed surprise and frustration upon learning that these explorers do not receive hazard pay, mission bonuses, or overtime compensation for their record-breaking journeys. The image of Koch wearing a hat that humorously claims she only received a "stupid hat" for going to the Moon has become a viral symbol of this disparity between their monumental achievements and their modest government salaries. While the Canadian Space Agency provides a similar pay range for mission specialists like Jeremy Hansen, the global conversation continues to highlight the dedication of these professionals who prioritize scientific advancement over financial gain.
