What an inspiring day at the F–10 Music Teachers Conference!

From thought-provoking sessions to hands-on workshops, the conference was a celebration of music education and the incredible work being done in classrooms across Victoria. It was wonderful to connect with passionate educators, share ideas, and take away fresh strategies to bring back to our students.

🔦 Presenter Spotlight: Katie Hull-Brown
Workshop: STRETCH! – Music, Movement & Meaning

We’re delighted to welcome Katie Hull-Brown to the F–10 Music Conference—an inspiring music educator, mentor and researcher whose work blends creativity, inclusion, and deep pedagogical insight.

In her dynamic Orff-inspired workshop STRETCH! – Music, Movement & Meaning, Katie invites participants to explore “elastic” as both a teaching metaphor and a hands-on tool for musical and social-emotional growth. Using rainbow rings, elastic bands, voice, and body, educators will engage in movement-rich, collaborative activities that deepen musical understanding, foster SEL, and build collective cognition.
This joyful session is perfect for both generalist and specialist teachers looking to expand their practice with purpose and play!

Katie brings over 25 years of experience across early childhood, primary, and tertiary settings, and is currently President of the Victorian Orff Schulwerk Association. She mentors over 50 teachers, delivers hands-on professional learning nationally, and was recently awarded the 2025 ASME Music Teacher Award (Experienced Category). A doctoral candidate at La Trobe University, her research focuses on the intersection of music education and social-emotional learning.

🔦 Presenter Spotlight: Dr Sue Arney
Workshop: Instrumental Music Teaching and the Victorian Curriculum 2.0

We’re excited to welcome Dr Sue Arney to the F–10 Music Conference—a passionate educator and researcher whose work continues to shape music teaching across Victoria and beyond.

In her practical and thought-provoking workshop, Instrumental Music Teaching and the Victorian Curriculum 2.0, Sue will explore how instrumental music is not just about technical skill, but an essential part of a holistic music education underpinned by listening, composing and performing.

This session will unpack the four interrelated strands of the Victorian Curriculum and demonstrate how thoughtful planning, delivery and assessment can lead to richer, more connected programs. Whether you teach individuals, small groups or ensembles, you’ll gain insight into designing instrumental programs that are engaging, purposeful and aligned with whole-school learning.

Sue brings deep expertise from a career spanning early years to tertiary education, and now lectures in Teacher Education at The University of Melbourne. With a Doctor of Education in Professional Learning in Music, she is committed to supporting teachers in creating meaningful and inclusive musical experiences.

Presenter Spotlight: Tristan Harris (Pancakes)
🎶 Understanding Aboriginal Culture Through Music and Storytelling

We’re proud to welcome Tristan Harris, a Noongar man from the Bibbulmann clan of Western Australia, to this year’s F–10 Music Conference.

Tristan—known widely as Pancakes—is a passionate cultural educator, performer and advocate. Raised in Collie on Noongar boodja, he grew up deeply immersed in his culture and continues the powerful legacy of his father, respected Elder Alan “Big Al” Harris, through the family-led group Western Creation.

With a performance history spanning across Australia and internationally, including tours through China and Pakistan, Tristan brings a dynamic and authentic perspective to the stage. In his workshop, participants will embark on an Aboriginal cultural journey through music and storytelling—featuring the Didgeridoo—and explore the vital connections between language, music and culture.

Presenter Spotlight: Ruth Friend 🎶

We’re excited to welcome the wonderful Ruth Friend to this year’s aMuse F–10 Conference! With over 40 years of experience across all levels of music education, Ruth brings deep expertise, infectious energy, and a passion for supporting teachers.

Session: Sing, Move and Play to Develop Students Who Are “Artful, Beat-ful and Tuneful”

Presenter Spotlight: Jake Muir

Harmonising Perspectives – Integrating Viewpoints in the F–10 Music Curriculum through Philosophy for Children and Community of Inquiry

We’re excited to welcome Jake Muir to the F–10 Conference 2025!

Jake’s session will explore how Philosophy for Children (P4C) and the Community of Inquiry (CoI) model can empower music educators to engage students in thoughtful, critical discussions about music across cultures, histories, and traditions. As the revised Victorian Curriculum places greater emphasis on exploring diverse viewpoints, Jake offers practical strategies to bring this vision to life in the music classroom—encouraging dialogue, empathy, and deep listening.

Jake is a PhD candidate at the University of Melbourne, researching how teachers facilitate classroom conversations around contemporary political issues. He works with the Victorian Association of Philosophy in Schools and has contributed extensively to the VCAA Arts curriculum. Drawing on his experience as Head of Performing Arts, Jake brings a wealth of insight into curriculum leadership, teacher development, and student-centred inquiry.
