SRC would like to wish everyone a happy NAIDOC for this week!
NAIDOC week is a week held annually that celebrates the history, culture and achievements of First Nations peoples.
This years theme: Keep the Fire Burning! Blak, Loud and Proud, honours the enduring strength and vitality of First Nations culture – with fire a symbol of connection to Country, to each other, and to the rich tapestry of traditions that define Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples.
UNSW SRC are committed to amplifying First Nations voices, and encourage everyone to take time to learn about First Nations peoples and cultures.
Some actionable steps you can take:
1. learn more on the origins of NAIDOC via the link in our campaigns reel.
2. Educate yourself on the land you’re on! UNSW campuses sit on the unceded lands of the Bidjigal, Gadigal and Ngunnawal peoples.

🗣️ FAIRER HOUSING FOR STUDENTS ⚠️
Students are commonly faced with a number of issues regarding landlords, such as those who ignore repairs and leave students in unsuitable living conditions. Unfortunately, students can feel too afraid to speak up about these urgent repairs in fear of termination at the end of their rental term. If students were to be evicted over wanting repairs for their accommodation, it is considered unfair eviction.
ALL students have the RIGHT to…
(1) Live in reasonably clean and fit environment.
(2) Be covered for reasonable repairs, even if it was noted BEFORE moving in.
(3) Not pay for the repair which must be paid for by the landlord or agent, unless you have caused the damage to the property.
The Tenant’s Union of NSW is actively leading a campaign to fight for fairer student housing legislation. 🏡
The link to sign the petition is available via highlights. ✍️

🎙️We’re celebrating the accomplishments of 2023 this month and today it’s the Student Representative Councils turn! 💙
✨This year, the SRC hosted a wide range of initiatives including the roll out of a free period product pilot program across 9 bathrooms at UNSW Kensington and 1 bathroom at UNSW Paddington.
They have also represented students in an array of issues including campaigning for international student opal concessions, the cost-of-living crisis, removing the cap on international student working hours and more! 🤗
We want to extend a huge congratulations to the UNSW SRC in 2023 for their hard work and look forward to seeing what the 2024 SRC (pictured above) will achieve! ✨

The UNSW SRC is proud to be supporting the Voice to Parliament and the Uluru Statement in Full.
The Voice would be a permanent advisory body that would give advice to the government about the issues that affect First Nations peoples.
More than a referendum, this is an opportunity for Australians to make history together. A Yes vote will recognise 65,000 years of indigenous connection to this land, establishing a practical path to better outcomes for First Nations people and a brighter future for all of us.
We encourage all students at UNSW to educate themselves on the upcoming referendum and make an informed decision at the ballot box.
Further information about the referendum can be found here:
