What an amazing day for the RMIT Unmanned Aircraft Systems -UAS- Research Team at the Greensborough Model Aircraft Club (GMAC)! With the sun beaming over the field ☀️, our team took flight of our Dead Cat Multirotor, Nimbus VTOL, Ranger 1600s, Piper Cub, and Hex Multirotors. Breaking our record for most aircraft on a Fly Day ✈️! This was a great opportunity for many in the team to experience the joys and challenges of flying fixed wing and multirotors for the first time.
Thanks to everyone who helped in organising the event and getting our birds up in the air ❤️! Keen on coming back next year for Fly Day 2024 😎!

Thinking of riding an AirTaxi? It can get bumpy, maybe even unsafe when windy.
Dr Abdulghani Mohamed's latest research in collaboration with University of Maryland & Lehigh University explores the severity of gusts around buildings and recommends regulations and design features for and .

It is with great pleasure that we announce that Dr Abdulghani Mohamed has received a Vice-Chancellor Teaching Award along with A. Prof Abhijit Date from the School of Engineering!
The award recognises the gamified-project-based learning activities used by Dr Mohamed in the courses he teaches. Such an experiential learning method is an effective engineering pedagogy and equips students with innovative problem-solving skills.

We are pleased to have organised a FLY DAY with the Melbourne Gliding Club for our students giving them an excellent opportunity for experiential learning. They get to experience aerodynamic forces first hand and actually fly the glider...
Thanks to Dr Abdulghani Mohamed for organising this activity!

Sharing photos with the top student teams from Dr Abdulghani Mohamed's Aerodynamics class that managed to design, build & fly gliders using a combination of analytical, numerical and experimental means.
This year's award involved taking the top team to watch TopGun yesterday as part of the A/AA private screening of the movie. From the photos you can tell they enjoyed it!

Announcement to our Alumni:
Please fill out a quick survey which will help us stay in touch with you for future opportunities. We often get approached by industry for job candidates. The survey will also give us some feedback about RUASRT which will allow us to expand our capabilities further.
RUASRT Feedback
This form is intended for RUASRT Alumni. It will help the team leaders to strategically position themselves to better serve its student members. The form will allow us to also keep in touch with our alumni for future opportunities. It should take a few minutes only.

Pleased to have our latest paper published in Nature Scientific Reports, entitled "A method for continuous study of soaring and windhovering birds" (see paper here: https://www.nature.com/articles/s41598-022-10359-w.epdf?sharing_token=Yncj56Hic2ixGrOWGgh7bNRgN0jAjWel9jnR3ZoTv0NduHn6emBvswn_j03H3AP75H2E4wBZQGEZoV3gGjG6Pe08IaLj7ZHOakd8q_EAMtoDp4x8aNBRISmWyFY01RV2Ducnj1wVRpuk2xLkpnYDEHMXF4cpApFIx3Mhdh8Q1Po%3D )
This is the first of a few papers on the research we (Abdulghani Mohamed and Simon Watkins ) have been conducting for the last 5 years at RMIT in collaboration with Dr Shane Windsor (University of Bristol), studying kinematics response of birds in turbulence and gusts.
We also have an amazing team of PhD Students working on the project: Matthew Penn , George He and Mario Groves-Raines
The work was also supported by several teams of undergraduate students over the years...
A big shout out to Martin Scuffins for the amazing work he and his team at (Leigh Valley Hawk and Owl Sanctuary) have done in supplying the birds for the research and also the training. The video shows some of the pain from the early training days!
Stay tuned for the next publication on the bird kinematics!

RAeS will be hosting an incredible event on the 27th of April, exploring how the Boeing MQ-28a Ghost Bat (prev. Loyal Wingman & Airpower Teaming System) come to be developed.
Adnan Raghdo, Executive at Boeing Commercial Airplanes, will cover the people, processes, industry engagement, and innovations utilized to produce Australia’s first military airplane in over 50 years. He will also reflect on the learnings of this journey and what it holds for the future of advanced development programs in Australia.
This event will be fantastic for professional development and networking for students. This is particularly true for those wishing to pursue careers in aerospace in Australia. The event is ticketed, with student prices available. A light meal and refreshments will be included.
RUSART alumni are working on the program now 😊

🛩🤩🚁 RUASRT will be holding an Information Night on Thursday, 10th March at 7pm! 🛩🤩🚁
The presentation will be focusing on the structure of our fixed-wing, quadcopter and presentation workshops. We will also be talking about UAS lab safety to ensure everyone will be ready and know what to expect before our workshops begin.
As always, the session will end with a Q&A so we highly encourage both new and past members to join!
Hope to see you there! 😁
