ckground. We see the establishment of long-term mentoring relationships between the students and our University tutors as an integral part of the personal and academic growth of both groups of people. OUR TUTORS
All tutors are current students of the University of Queensland. They study various degrees including engineering, law, science and medicine. This diversity allows RTC to offer tutoring in a wide range of subjects. Additionally, many of our tutors have past tutoring experience or have worked previously with refugees in the pro bono sector. Prospective tutors must first become a member of RTC with our small $5 membership fee - which allows you to benefit from several sponsorship deals and access to various events throughout the year. Tutors must undergo a compulsory tutor induction session, as well as hold a valid Blue Card, before being assigned to a tutoring workshop. OUR STUDENTS
Our students attend various high schools in Brisbane and are all from refugee backgrounds. The program is aimed at students who intend to pursue tertiary education upon the completion of Grade 12. TUTORING WORKSHOPS
When:
Weekly workshops on Monday or Wednesday 4-6pm. Students select which day they wish to attend (this must be the same day every week). What:
Tutoring occurs in group teaching spaces but with a 1-1 student-tutor ratio. Tutors are placed with students depending on what subject they need help with that week. Students are expected to bring along their school work and assignments each week. All students are tutored together in the same room, creating a vibrant, friendly atmosphere, while our 1:1 tutor/student ratio allows us to maximise each individual student’s learning experience. How:
Students must travel independently to the University of Queensland campus which is well serviced by public transport. The tutoring coordinators meet the students at the UQ Lakes bus stop at 3.50pm before each session. OTHER EVENTS
Specialist Workshops:
In addition to weekly tutoring sessions, RTC also provides specialist workshops and presentations either on school campuses or at UQ. Previous topics covered include; street law, career pathways, resume writing and plagiarism. Social events
Each semester, our team will host picnics, discussion nights and other social events both as a club and in conjunction with other UQ clubs and external organisations. We want our tutors to benefit from their RTC membership as much as possible through attending these events and making as many friends as possible!
