AI can be a powerful learning tool, but it cannot replace human exchange, empathy, the collective construction of knowledge, or meaningful encounters with other cultures.

Learning a language is, above all, a deeply human experience.

With love,

Teacher Rocío.

Hola comunidad!

It is with great joy that I share that, from 18 to 20 September, I will be in Penang, Malaysia, participating as a speaker at the 5th CELEAP Congress of Spanish as a Foreign Language in the Asia-Pacific.

I will be presenting “Habitar el español: lengua, poder y cosmovisiones en el aula”, a proposal born from years of teaching, from the questions that continue to guide me, and from my deep belief that teaching a language also means creating space for different identities, stories and ways of understanding the world.

What excites me most is not only the opportunity to share my work, but also to build spaces for reflection, listening and learning together with other educators. I am not travelling only to bring my ideas; I am also travelling with an open heart and mind, ready to be transformed by everything these encounters have to offer.

From Brisbane to Penang, carrying with me the Spanish language, Latin America and all the voices that inhabit our classrooms!

Did you know that the potato we know today is the result of thousands of years of observation, care and shared knowledge?

High in the Andes, Indigenous communities learned to recognise which wild potatoes tasted better, resisted the cold or grew more successfully at high altitudes.

After each harvest, families saved the strongest potatoes and planted them again. They repeated this process over many generations. Slowly, new varieties appeared in different colours, shapes, sizes and flavours.

This long process is called domestication. It was not the discovery of one person. It was knowledge created and passed down by the Indigenous peoples of the Andes.

They also learned to make chuño by using the freezing night air and the warmth of the sun to remove water from potatoes. This allowed families to preserve food for a long time, even when future harvests were difficult.

In La papa que guardaba un secreto, Killa discovers that one small potato can hold ancestral secrets, memories and knowledge that continue to grow beneath the earth.

Would you like to discover Killa’s full story?

Queridos amigos, familia, comunidad.

Tupananchiskama.
Hasta que volvamos a encontrarnos.

Espero que disfruten de esta historia🤍

Amigos!

Our accent is part of our identity. It carries the places, people, experiences and memories that have shaped us. When we learn a new language, we don’t need to erase our story or sound like someone else. What matters is having the courage to speak, share our ideas and communicate with confidence.

With love,
Teacher Rocio

It is understandable how much is at stake for families when they hope their children will maintain Spanish: identity, relationships, family history, culture, and the ability to communicate with the people they love.

Research on Family Language Policy shows that language transmission does not depend only on how much a language is spoken at home, but also on how that language is experienced within family relationships. The emotional context, shared experiences, and children’s active participation all influence how the language is maintained and how meaningful it remains over time.

Supporting bilingualism, therefore, also means caring for the relationship our children build with Spanish.

Spanish can be an inheritance without becoming a debt.

With love, Teacher Rocio.
