Transformational Home Economists: always ahead of the times
Passions and Practice: Walking in Cecile Falvey’s Footsteps My son was walking around his university campus today. He came across a plaque embedded in the footpath. It made me smile. “In the 1950s Home Economics Lecturer Cecile Falvey caused a scandal by allowing male students to do fibre craft.” Home Economists have always been ahead of their time. According to Cecile, “happiness is weaving every day.” Her story was described as that of “a very ordinary person” whose passion for weaving encouraged others to pursue their dreams....

Over a decade ago, I had the privilege of writing a philosophy article that was published in the Asian Regional Association for Home Economics (ARAHE). Today, ARAHE is a public access journal, making all their issues available for everyone to read.
Reflecting on my article about a “method for critical thinking” in Home Economics (or any discipline!) inspired by Rene Descartes (the “I think therefore I am” philosopher), I feel it’s a perfect time to share it with you. You can find my double-blind peer-reviewed article (Jay R. Deagon, Augmenting Home Economists’ Understandings of Cartesian Philosophy, pp 131-140, Journal of ARAHE, Vol. 21(4), 2014) at the very end of the linked volume.
In a world that needs more well-developed critical thinkers, I use this method every day to question truths and facts. I hope you find it as enlightening and useful as I do. Enjoy the read, and I’d love to hear your thoughts on it!
