Masters swimming performance, technique and training insights with swimmer and coach Danielle Spurling

22/08/2026

Everyone needs someone to look at their stroke and point out what we can do better ๐Ÿ˜ƒ I was lucky enough to have that experience with one of the best this morning Ash Delaney

Letโ€™s just say, there is a lot to fine tune!!! ๐Ÿ˜‚

Starting a new training block today, and reminding myself that Iโ€™m not training just to maintain what Iโ€™ve got or be better in the gym ๐Ÿ˜ƒ

My goal is to get stronger, more powerful and ultimately faster in the water, with the big goal of Budapest โ€˜27 on the horizon ๐ŸŠโ€โ™€๏ธ

The gym isnโ€™t the destination. Itโ€™s one part of building the swimmer I want to be in the water ๐Ÿ’ช๐ŸŠโ€โ™€๏ธ

Always trying to refine what I am doing ๐Ÿ˜ƒ Still learning. Still building. Still chasing faster ๐ŸŠโ€โ™€๏ธ

For years I thought getting faster simply meant swimming more.

More laps.
More kilometres.
More time in the pool.

Now Iโ€™m not so sure.

One of the biggest lessons Iโ€™ve learned as both a Masters swimmer and coach is that a 50m sprinter, a 200m backstroker and an open water swimmer shouldnโ€™t all train the same way.

That idea inspired my latest feature article, where I explore:

๐ŸŠ The three energy systems that power every race.

๐Ÿ’ช Why your pool and gym training should match your event.

๐ŸŽฏ The common mistakes that stop many Masters swimmers reaching their potential.

The goal isnโ€™t simply to become fitter. Itโ€™s to become the athlete your event demands.

Iโ€™d love to know what you think.

The Noosa week that was โ˜€๏ธ๐ŸŠโ€โ™€๏ธ ๐Ÿ‹๐Ÿปโ€โ™€๏ธ ๐ŸŒŠ๐Ÿฌ๐Ÿณ๐Ÿฉต๐Ÿ’™๐Ÿคฉ๐Ÿ˜

Packing so much in to our time here and loving every minute of it ๐Ÿซถ

This is why I love open water swimming ๐Ÿ’™๐Ÿฉต ๐ŸŒŠ

No lane ropes or clock โฐ
Just a sunrise, the ocean and a group of people who all decided that getting up before dawn was somehow a good idea โ˜€๏ธ ๐ŸŠโ€โ™€๏ธ

Itโ€™s funny how the hardest part is usually getting out of bed. After that, everything else seems to fall into place ๐Ÿ’œ๐Ÿฉท

Laguna Bay Stats:
Water temp: 20C
Water conditions: 9/10 flat behind the break, enjoyable to swim and catch a few little rolling waves in
Session: 10/10 ins and outs and lots of tempo and threshold
Crew: 10/10 Noosa Tri Club
Water Clarity: 8/10 bit cloudy

Noosa, youโ€™re making it very hard to leave ๐ŸŒŠโ˜€๏ธ

Our malvernmarlins relay teams have been recognised in the 2025 World Aquatics Masters Top 10, finishing:

2nd - Womenโ€™s 4ร—200m Freestyle Relay
7th - Womenโ€™s 4ร—100m Medley Relay

Relay success is always shared success, and Iโ€™m lucky to swim alongside such fantastic teammates ๐ŸŠโ€โ™€๏ธ

A small milestoneโ€ฆ but a motivating one ๐Ÿ˜ƒ

Next goal? To get myself on the individual World Aquatics Top 10 list. Time to get back to work ๐Ÿ’™

And so continues my exploration of pools on the Sunshine Coast โ˜€๏ธHappy to have a chance to swim at the University of Sunshine Coast, 50m outdoor heated pool ๐ŸŠโ€โ™€๏ธ Home pool of backstroke ๐Ÿ Kaylee McKeown

Pool Stats:
Water Temp: 27C nice to swim in
Session verdict: 10/10 enjoyed the variety Coach Jake set for the crew, from an 800 time trial to explosive 15m
Pool mechanics: 10/10 - lane ropes top quality and nice and smooth to swim in
Squad friendliness: 10/10 โค๏ธ very welcoming

Only negative - the sun was fully up in the sky and very hard to do backstroke

Another gorgeous day exploring the Sunshine Coast โ˜€๏ธ๐Ÿ’™

Today it was up Mount Coolum - steep, rocky and plenty of stairs, but absolutely worth it for those views from the top! โ›ฐ๏ธ๐ŸŒŠ

I am loving all the walking and hiking while weโ€™re here in Noosa. There is something pretty special about heading out on foot, finding a new trail and seeing where it takes you. Beach walks, national park trails, mountain climbsโ€ฆ Iโ€™ll happily take them all ๐Ÿ˜ƒ

Swimming will always be my first love, but I have to say, this is a pretty good way to spend a winter too ๐Ÿซถ

Ten weeks up here is starting to feel like a very good idea. โ˜€๏ธ๐Ÿ˜ƒ
