Choosing between staying in an unsafe home or leaving to no home is a decision no one should ever have to make. There is no safe option, no ok option, and no option we should be ok with anyone in our communities having to face. We can make a difference for the women and children at risk in our communities.
The one thing that can change the outcome for these victims is support. The leading cause for homelessness in women and children is domestic violence in their family home. Last year 30,000 women and children were homeless as a result of escaping domestic violence.
Next week Senlina Mayer, Mel Lay, Liam Leblond and myself will be sleeping out as a part of the Sleepout for Homelessness. We would really appreciate your support, every dollar adds up from as little as donating the cost of your morning coffee or lunch. This year we are hoping to raise $1700, we currently only have $193 to go to hit this goal!

Many small moves targeting those most at risk to support their transition to stable housing can make a profound difference to a person’s life. The Sleepout for Homelessness campaign invites members of the architectural community to raise funds and awareness by sleeping out for just one night and has been doing that by working in partnership with the Queensland-based volunteer-run charity Second Chance Programme. Many women and children are coping as best as they can under increasing threats to hang on to a place to call home, sometimes at risk to their lives.
Second Chance Programme has been supporting women and children transitioning to safety. This targeted funding keeps women and children alive during what can be the most dangerous time.
Thank you to our friends and family who have already so generously supported this cause.

“For Lease For Living - reimagining retail tenancies and residential opportunities”
Open retail tenancies lay as empty carcasses around Brisbane City, with glazed storefronts used as mirrors for the homeless, and eaves as shelter from the sun.
What would it look like to transform these spaces into liveable conditions connected by protected green spaces, weaving between bike and pedestrian-only infrastructure? Public and semi-public spaces mediate the in-between of once ‘storefronts’ to create a humble communal patio used by the displaced.
Generative AI through suggests one way this could be executed - designed by

Happy world architecture day! This years theme is Architecture for Resilient Communities. “With this theme, the UIA seeks to place particular emphasis on the capacity and responsibility of architecture to create viable community life and open an international discussion on the relationship between urban and rural areas in all countries.” UN-Habitat
Building, growing and creating resilient communities is a vital part of our architectural mission and responsibilities even as students as we seek to develop our skill sets and voice within the industry. We are the architects of the future and should strive to envision a future where sustainable development and healthy communities are a reality we can help realise.
Please enjoy a few snapshots of where architecture has been finding our team from CopenhagenQrchitecture Festival to Brisbane Revit glitching, site visits, and the archi fit check on the way up to the studio office.

2 nights ago, our team alongside other firms across Brisbane slept out in our cars to fundraise money for at the Sleepout for Homelessness. in order to draw attention to hidden homelessness.
Thank you for everyone who donated towards the cause, allowing us to surpass our initial fundraising goal. With your support, IGNIS was able to raise over $1500, contributing to the overall 2023 sleepout totalling to over $60,000.
While our team slept in our cars for one night, this living situtation is a reality for so many in Australia. As a part of the architectural and built environment community, homelessness is an issue that must be addressed.
Thank you to all the participating teams:

IGNIS 2023 update: Sionnan edition
It’s been a while and whilst it may appear that we’ve slowed down I don’t think any of us have had time to slow down! Starting from the end of 2022 which started with wrapping up my Bachelor of Architectural Design degree with a hectic group assignment for tech. During this time I worked on a few different photography projects for ( ) with some model portfolios, marketing photos for a few local businesses and event photography. Amidst the final weeks of assessment I worked alongside a few other UQ architecture students and staff and co-curated the 2022 Architecture exhibition. A few weeks after this I had my formal graduation, which during that same week I started out as a student of architecture at Architectus. After three weeks flew by of my first few weeks in my new role I haas my Christmas break which over new years we had a few catch-ups with the IGNIS crew… at GOMA of course and I walked from Mt. Cootha to Stradbroke Island and spent a few days hiking, fishing and relaxing before heading back into my year out. Over the past few months I have learnt so much working in practice surrounded by some amazing mentors and I’m looking forward to seeing my experience and active architectural learning develop. Another really exciting thing I’ve had the opportunity to do is tutor a first year Architectural Communications course at UQ which has been inspiring (especially with a class full of talented and passionate archi students) and nostalgic going back over the same drawings of the UQ art museum I did just four years ago. So fast forward to right now I am working on the early stages of wedding planning and sitting at my laptop editing photos from the SONA welcome party Architectus hosted last Friday. There’s still a lot to come from IGNIS this year we’re not quite decided on what that looks like…Id love to put out a few more resources for students and share a little bit on our personal stories on architecture and going from studying to working in practice and what it’s been like to start my career so far….so stay tuned!

IGNIS 2023 UPDATE: Liam Edition
Hearing about an opportunity to tag alongside a course in Japan, I immediately began packing my things in preparation for my second escapade to one of my favourite travel destinations. Once there I deeply enjoyed interacting with peers, colleagues, and course staff as we traversed the urban and rural Tokyo landscape. Along the way we visited local firms employing UQ alumni as well as many national practitioners who imparted their years of experience in practice onto us. This in conjunction with diving into the culture, observing local minutia, and interacting with the environment fostered an experience unlike any I’ve had before. My time spent with everyone created priceless memories priceless memories and I’ll cherish them as such; forming many new relationships while strengthening old ones. I was with the main course group for roughly a week before I had to cut my time short to go to a welcome induction in Melbourne where I learned more about my role as a rep for the coming year at UQ as well as meet other amazing reps from unis across Australia.
For the upcoming calendar year I’ll be completing the final semester of my degree, hopefully getting a formal job to supplement the now somewhat barren schedule. I do, however have a feeling there won’t be much time for extras. With my positions as both SONA rep for UQ and Vice President for the upcoming year, I’m exceptionally excited to forge new paths, foster relationships, and take advantage of the opportunities that will populate my journey in the coming year.
I’m hoping I get to see everyone at all the events I’ll be helping out on for this year, and if not then just to be able to meet up in person would make me absolutely elated.
Ciao [for now]🫂

R U - really - OK? - a conversation could change a life.
Mental health is something that anyone can face - but it’s something that no one should have to face alone. A simple conversation could change someone’s life. You never know what someone else might be going through and whilst r u ok day is a single day on our calendar asking each other and supporting each other is something that needs to be happening every day.
It’s ok to not be ok. It’s ok to respond to someone and say no I’m not ok. It’s important to listen to your friends and help support them and find them additional support.
If you are struggling and would like someone to talk to our dms are always open

Tonight our team will be participating in the sleepout for homelessness in an effort to fundraise $2500 for Second Chance Programme : a volunteer run charity working in our community to support women and children at risk of homelessness and assisting with their journey towards safe and secure housing.
To accomplish this we will be sleeping out on August the 5th - which tragically is a daily reality for far too many in our community. Please help by making a donation through our team's page.
It only takes a minute and any money you can give (no matter how large or small) will go a long way to helping us reach our target. Please donate via the link in our bio or scan the QR code.
Thank you, we really appreciate your support.
