Suspended chords are neither happy nor sad—they’re still making up their minds. 🎹

Remove the third from a major or minor chord and replace it with the second or fourth:

Sus2 = 1 – 2 – 5
Sus4 = 1 – 4 – 5

That missing third gives the chord its beautiful, open and slightly unresolved sound.

Have you ever looked at **C5, C, Cm, C° or C+** and wondered whether you were reading music or someone’s Wi-Fi password? 😂

Chord symbols are simply shorthand for musical recipes:

🎸 **C5** — Power
☀️ **C** — Major
🌧️ **Cm** — Minor
😈 **C°** — Diminished
🚀 **C+** — Augmented

Once you understand the formulas underneath them, chord symbols become much easier to recognise—and the same recipes work in every key and on every instrument.

What if the number of sharps in a key signature was hiding inside the shape of its letter? 🎼

This simple visual trick can help you remember the key signatures from A to G—and once you know those, subtracting from seven reveals the opposite flat keys!

If your fretting hand feels stiff or your fingers struggle to stretch, the problem might not be your fingers — it could be where you’re holding the guitar.

Try this simple experiment and notice how much your finger mobility changes as your elbow bends and your hand comes upward.

This is one reason you'll often see classical and jazz guitarists playing with the guitar neck raised. Sometimes improving your playing isn't about practising harder — it's about making the instrument easier for your body to play.

You don’t need perfect pitch to develop a great musical ear.

Professional musicians train using **relative pitch**—learning to recognise each note by its relationship to the tonic, or number 1.

In this simple piano exercise, you’ll hear how numbers 2, 3 and 4 each have their own musical flavour. By consciously connecting the number with its sound, you can gradually learn to hear a note before you play it.

That is when improvisation stops being guesswork—and starts becoming a musical conversation. 🎵

Do you struggle with timing at the piano?

Try stepping away from your usual way of practising and think like a drummer instead. 🥁🎹

Reduce your song to just two notes—the key note in each hand, played one octave apart. Then play only the original rhythms of the song.

By temporarily removing the melody and chords, your brain can concentrate entirely on timing, coordination and groove.

Once the rhythm feels natural in your body, return to the correct notes. You may be surprised by how much easier the original piece feels.

Sometimes we don’t need to count harder. We simply need the drummer inside us to teach the pianist how to move.
