Research to Policy. Evidence to Action.

One of the most encouraging outcomes of SARSYC VI was seeing young researchers engage directly with policymakers, parliamentarians, academics, and development practitioners from across the region.

Throughout the conference, researchers presented evidence on some of Southern Africa's most pressing and emerging issues, including education retention, comprehensive sexuality education, mental health, substance abuse, gambling among youth, endometriosis, and the wellbeing of vulnerable populations. What made these moments particularly powerful was not only the quality of the research, but the meaningful discussions that followed, with policymakers expressing interest in taking these findings beyond the conference space and into policy and legislative conversations.

This is exactly what SARSYC VI strives to achieve: creating a bridge between research, advocacy, and action. By providing a platform for young researchers to generate and share evidence grounded in African realities, the conference helps ensure that youth voices are not only heard but are positioned to influence decision-making processes that affect communities across the region.

🌍 From dialogue to action, youth are shaping Southern Africa’s future.

Windhoek became a meeting point for young people from across the region during SARSYC VI, where youth, policymakers, researchers and partners explored practical ways to advance progress in education, health, wellbeing and youth participation.

The three-day conference concluded with the Windhoek Declaration, placing youth priorities at the center of regional advocacy and calling for stronger collaboration to turn commitments into action.

UNESCO remains committed to working with young people and partners to build inclusive, safe and empowering learning environments where every young person can thrive.
