In the dense ecosystems of the Amazon rainforest, researchers found a hidden ally in the fight against plastic waste. The discovery involves a fungus that eats polyurethane, one of the most common and hardest to recycle plastics used today. The fungus can survive on plastic alone as its food source.
π¬ The science of digestion
Known as Pestalotiopsis microspora, this fungus produces an enzyme that breaks down the chemical bonds in synthetic polymers. Most biological decomposition needs oxygen, but this fungus can do its work in anaerobic conditions too. That matters for waste management because it could work:
* At the deep, oxygen-deprived levels of massive landfills
* In sealed waste treatment facilities
* Within underwater environments where plastic debris often piles up

This discovery offers a bit of hope for a planet dealing with millions of tons of plastic trash. Traditional recycling often fails with polyurethane because it's used in foam insulation, garden hoses, and synthetic fibers. Using a biological agent instead of harsh chemicals or high-heat incineration could offer a cleaner way to clear out non-biodegradable waste.

Moving this fungus from a lab setting to industrial use is still a real challenge. Scientists are working out how to speed up its growth and how to introduce it into waste systems without harming local ecosystems.
