"Thought for the Week"
*Winning isn't everything, but wanting to win is." – Vince Lombardi*
I love this quote! It is really important for coaches to grasp this concept. Building a young team who might not win every game but who is super competitive with a "never say die attitude" is a quality that many coaches would dream of.
There is absolutely no value in a young pathway team winning most their games. Whilst it looks good on the CV of any coach, it more often than not stunts the growth and development of the team and its players. Winning is like an addiction, the more it happens, the better it feels. This often prevents coaches from taking risks, experimenting and discovering new players, but rather sticking with the talented few who can get the team across the line and bring the desired result that is good for the coach.
I remember watching an U11 rugby match a few years ago. When I arrived at the ground there were many comments about one player in the opposition team that was really good. When the match started one could see straight away that the entire game plan was to get the ball as quickly as possible to the best player on their team. The only problem was they up against a team who were super competitive with a "never say die" attitude. The expectation that they would win the game because the main player would score all the tries never materialised and they had no other plan to include the rest of their backline. My only hope was that the coach realised that in losing the game, he would have built a plan that included the rest of the players.
The most successful T20 franchise teams usually win around 60% of their games. The other 40% is vital to the learning, development and growth of the team. How to become more resilient, more competitive and create a "never say die attitude" is learnt by playing regularly against tough opposition, overcoming many obstacles and of course – losing!
I enjoy watching young talented teams struggle and go through tough

*Rural Chiweshe Talent Gets Chitungwiza Boost Through Ramah Academy Partnership*
*Chitungwiza*
Twenty promising young footballers from rural Chiweshe are set to gain invaluable exposure and development opportunities, thanks to a groundbreaking partnership between Ramah Academy and the Tambe Tambe Soccer Academy, located in Gunguwe village.
This collaboration will see the Under-18 players featuring for Ramah Academy, an affiliate of the prestigious Chitungwiza Junior Football Development League.
The initiative, poised to significantly impact the lives and careers of these aspiring athletes, was facilitated by the dedicated efforts of Mr. Masiya, a passionate teacher and coach in Chiweshe together with Ramah Academy scouts.
"This is a dream come true for these young boys," expressed a beaming Mr. Masiya, who played a pivotal role in connecting the two academies. "The talent here in Chiweshe is abundant, but opportunities are scarce. Partnering with Ramah Academy opens up a new world for them, allowing them to compete at a higher level and gain the recognition they deserve."
The partnership was made possible through the generous support of Resbrand Sport Management Agency, a UK-based organization fronted by former footballer Reuben Tawodzera, who hails from Chitungwiza. Resbrand is committed to nurturing grassroots talent and is providing crucial support for the welfare of the players, including their transport to and from Chiweshe for training and matches.
Resbrand Sport Management Agency Representative in Zimbabwe Mr Newton Matema highlighted the importance of investing in young talent, particularly from underserved communities.
"We grew up in Chitungwiza, and I understand the challenges faced by young players who aspire to make it big in football. This partnership is about giving back and creating a pathway for these talented individuals from Chiweshe to realize their full potential."
