The Research Council of Zimbabwe (RCZ) is offering scholarships to support MPhil, taught or Masters by research degree programmes in line with the National Research Priorities (NRPs). Zimbabwe considers human capital investment via education a major tool for sustainable development and for the attainment of Vision 2030. According to the 2018 National Critical Skills Audit Report by the Ministry of Higher and Tertiary Education, Science and Technology Development (MHTEISTD), Zimbabwe has a critical skills deficit in Engineering and Technology, Natural and Applied Sciences, Medical and Health Sciences and this needs focused planning to increase enrolments in these areas. The aim of the scholarship programme is to reward high-achieving students and to invest in human capital development in these areas. RCZ anticipates that the beneficiaries from the 2020 Scholarship Programme will be absorbed into Zimbabwe’s workforce by 2022.

Benefits

The scholarship covers tuition fees up to ZWL30 000.

Applicants must:

Be a national and resident of Zimbabwe.
Be in possession of a good first degree (minimum second class).
Be applying for a full-time taught masters or masters by research or MPhil in Engineering and Technology, Natural and Applied Sciences, and Health Sciences at public Zimbabwean universities.
Research on any aspect of COVID-19 (health, economics, social, etc) will be given special consideration.

We are seeking for highly-motivated PhD students, starting in spring or fall semester in the year 2020. The new students will have an option to pursue a Ph.D. degree in Earth System Science, Crop, Soil, and Environmental Sciences, or Biosystems Engineering, and will also have the opportunity to participate in the NSF Research Traineeship program on improving resilience to climate variability and change through data-informed decision making. The successful candidate will have the opportunity to design and conduct research in one or more of the following areas: 1) exploiting climate information and satellite earth system big data for environmental or agricultural management decision making; 2) improving hydroclimate or agroclimate system modeling, monitoring, and forecasting across scales 3) analyzing impacts of climate variability and change and associated hazards on natural and human systems. The new students will be expected to conduct original research, present research findings in national or international conferences, and publish in peer-reviewed scientific journals. A competitive fellowship or research assistantship for the projects sponsored by USDA/NIFA, NSF, NOAA, and Auburn University with competitive stipend and full tuition waiver will be provided to qualified candidates. Qualifications

1. A M.S. degree in a science or engineering discipline, such as meteorology and climatology, geographic information science, biosystems engineering, hydrology, agronomy, ecology, environmental science/engineering, physics, and others. A deserving candidate with a B.S. degree will also be considered for a combined M.S. and Ph.D. program. 2. A strong analytical and quantitative skill as demonstrated within academic transcripts and/or publication records. 3. Computing and statistical skill (e.g., with R, Python, or Matlab) and experience with geospatial data analysis and numerical modeling are advantageous. 4. Possess or demonstrate a potential for excellent written and verbal communication skills.
