Echoes of tradition: the boys unite in a powerful rendition of the school war cry that has echoed through this hall for decades.

He joined the school in 1984 as a librarian. The school was under the leadership of Mr Chibanguza, the first black Headmaster after independence in 1980. He laboured on even in those early days when racial integration among students and staff was a big issue at institutions like Ellis Robins.

His love for the school and desire to make a difference in the lives of the boys, he says, motivated him to continue all these years. He always saw fathers, community leaders and corporate somebodies in the boys. And he would that all members of staff take this perspective when dealing with the young learners so as to ably help them to realize their purposes in life.

For a Fush boy to succeed, he offers a piece of advice, and for free, of course! “He must work hard, and pursue the vision he has”, he says. He adds that most boys who pass through the school do not understand why parents send them to school.

He was more than a librarian to the boys and staff. He assumed the role of sharing from the Word of God at school assemblies and other functions associated with the school. The Reverend (Rev.), as he was affectionately known, was a minister to many. He confessed that he also engaged in one-on-one counselling sessions with some of the learners. Since the days of Mr K. K. Msora, he has been paying part-fees for some of the needy boys. Indeed, he was also a father figure to many. This explains why he has gained respect of both current and old boys. He has become a rallying point for a wide spectrum (time-wise) of old boys as they identify with him, being a respectable long serving member of staff at Ellis Robins since the early 80s.

On his secret of maintaining the library furniture and books over the years, he said that he was running the library on professional lines. His main role was in issuing out books, binding and covering books, and ordering more. He has also been sourcing books from donors. He has worked with student junior and senior librarians over the years.

Panimaha Hikwa, a current Upper 6 boy, a prefect, a debater, a shield-holding public speaker, expressed his gratefulness for the role Mr Samuel Harrison has played in the lives of boys. He opined that he was approachable, caring and understanding. He said he gained a lot of wisdom from his interactions with Mr Harrison. The Rev was also firm with the boys as the library is a place that requires discipline.

Now today, Friday, 14 June, 2019, with one day to go to his 60th birthday, he technically retires from his long service at this great school. Officially, his retirement day is tomorrow, but now Saturday is not a working day for us. So we wish Mr Harrison, a restful retirement, and express our gratefulness for the times we shared over the years.

DOUBLE CELEBRATION

The day is 21 May 2019. It is someones’s birth day anniversary but yet another event. The Fush community had in the previous days received the news with quite a shock that one of the longest serving members of the school was going to hang his boots, as it were.

Mr Raphael Mudau was born on this beautiful day 65 years ago. The staff and boys were singing with life the most sung song in the world: Happy Birthday to You. This time it was directed to the man himself. The headmaster Mr Mazonde steered the proceedings well until to the point Mr Mudau was given the podium. Surprisingly to the boys, he began to unwrap his valedictory speech. It was a mixture of emotions- sadness as one of us was leaving; joy as it is someone’s birthday anniversary; happiness as someone has run the last mile with victory to the finishing line of his career with the ministry of education.

Reverend Harrison had minutes before led the devotions on Elijah and Elisha, challenging the boys and staff as to what they would remain with at the departure of key people in their lives.

Mr Mudau began to serve as teacher at the school in 1986. He became Malcolm House master in 1989. He was convinced he ran the race so well. He stated that all what could have been painful moments as he was discharging his duty was meant for good and for the raising of the Ellis Robins Banner.

As usual wit h such occasions, the current generation of Robins gave a goodbye of a thunderous school’s war cry.

Fare thee well, Mr Mudau.

Once a Robin, always a Robin.

From an assembly devotion today facilitated by Reverend Harrison, we were encouraged to take an illustration of banking hall doors. One door button turns green and beckons you to enter. As you get into the door way after opening the outer one, the inner one will not open until the outer one closes. 2018 and 2019 are like doors. As learners we have to forget about the challenges and failures in 2018 as far as that pullsus down. We have to look forward to opportunities in 2019. The widow of 1 Kings 4:1ff had to shut herself in to witness the miracle of God. We have to shut ourselves in in 2019 and focus on hard work as per the Lord's instructions.

We, as an institution, like to wish all staff, parents, learners and associates a wonderful Christmas and a happy, peaceful and safe 2019. Enjoy!

It is with a heavy heart that I must share the sad news of the passing of a great Dolphin. Brian Umera is no longer with us. His legacy will live on for ages, both in the mission and vision of Ellis Robins School Old Boys Association & Ellis Robins School and in the hearts and souls of all the people who have had the pleasure of interacting with Brian through the years.

Please take a moment of silence to honor a great Dolphin.

Answering to the name Royal Mabika is this young gentleman of Ellis Robins School who has made a name in the Junior Schools category of athletics. He has fared very well in the 10 000 m and 10 km races. Born 16 years ago, he has found himself getting several awards all through. A gold medal for a 3rd position at the Tanganda Half marathon in the Eastern Highlands. A bronze medal for coming 6th at the Lusaka (Zambia) 10 km road race. A bronze medal for a 5th position at the Miway Wally Hayward marathon in South Africa. His best time, being 34:05:02, was at the Harry Gwala marathon (South Africa). He was chosen to be a national torch bearer on the 18th of April 2018 at the Independence Day celebrations. So much more, it appears, awaits this Cuthbert-Nyasango-mentee.
