Minister Shava Commends HIT for Unqualified Audit Opinion, Urges Commercialisation of Lithium Battery and Renewable Energy Projects

The Minister of Higher and Tertiary Education, Innovation, Science and Technology Development, Honourable Ambassador Dr Frederick Shava, has commended the Harare Institute of Technology (HIT) Board and Management for consistently holding successful Annual General Meetings on time and for attaining an unqualified audit opinion, describing the achievement as a reflection of strong compliance with the University's statutes, prudent financial stewardship, and astute leadership that inspires confidence among stakeholders.

Speaking at the University’s Annual General Meeting held at the Ministry's boardroom, Minister Shava extended heartfelt congratulations to the Vice Chancellor, Professor Quinton Kanhukamwe, for being honoured with several prestigious awards in 2025, including the Transformative Leadership Award, the Outstanding Education Leader of the Year accolade, and recognition as the overall best-performing State University Vice Chancellor. The Minister said the accolades were a testament to visionary leadership and institutional excellence.

The Minister also applauded HIT's continued investment in research, singling out the establishment of the Institute's AI-powered research centre, which he said positions HIT at the forefront of innovation.

However, he challenged the University to fully commercialise its lithium battery and renewable energy projects, noting that these signature initiatives are directly aligned with Vision 2030 and hold the potential to lower the cost of solar energy products for the benefit of Zimbabwe.

Looking ahead, Minister Shava urged the University to complete its outstanding infrastructure projects systematically, one at a time, while ensuring quality delivery and sustainability. He said doing so would consolidate HIT's reputation as a centre of excellence in science, engineering, and technology.

In closing, the Minister wished the University a successful meeting and assured HIT of the Ministry's continued support as it works to consolidate its position and pursue its aspirations, including its drive to establish a local "Silicon Valley" innovation ecosystem. He pledged that the Ministry would ensure the University faces no disruption to this facility or to its broader innovation endeavours.

HIT Hosts University of Lusaka Delegation for Strategic Benchmarking Visit

On Thursday, 10 September 2026, the Harare Institute of Technology (HIT) welcomed a delegation from the University of Lusaka (UNILUS), Zambia, on a benchmarking visit aimed at exploring a strategic partnership between the two institutions.

The engagement, held under the theme of building a transformative, regionally aligned collaboration, brought together leadership from both universities to chart pathways for joint work in research, innovation, and capacity building.

Purpose and Vision

Presenting the context for the visit, the UNILUS officials outlined the purpose as exploring mutually beneficial collaboration pathways to strengthen research, innovation, and capacity building between the two institutions, with a vision of fostering a transformative partnership aligned with regional development goals and global technological advancement.

Complementary Strengths

The session highlighted the complementary institutional profiles the two universities bring to a potential partnership. UNILUS was positioned around its broad multidisciplinary research base, capacity-building expertise, and entrepreneurship hub, while HIT's strengths were framed around its engineering and technology base, innovation hubs, and industrial linkages. Together, the two institutions identified a shared space for joint innovation and technology-driven development, with mutual benefits spanning accelerated research outputs, expanded mobility and exchange programmes, and joint innovation initiatives.

Three Pillars of Collaboration

Discussions were structured around three proposed pillars:
Pillar 1: Research, Innovation and Commercialisation - focused on four thematic areas: Sustainable Energy and Environment, ICT and Digital Transformation, Biomedical Engineering, Healthcare, Industry 4.0 and Smart Manufacturing. The proposed approach includes collaborative grant proposals, shared research facilities and labs, and multidisciplinary consortia, with commercialisation objectives covering IP management, joint innovation hubs and incubators, and industry-linked prototype development.

Pillar 2: Capacity Building and Mobility - covering staff exchange (visiting professorships, collaborative workshops), student exchange and internships (undergraduate and postgraduate exchanges, industry internships, joint projects and thesis supervision), and postgraduate training through co-developed curricula, dual degrees, and joint research capacity development.

Pillar 3: Entrepreneurship Ecosystem Development - centred on collaborative incubators and accelerators, joint policy and ecosystem development for tech entrepreneurship, and regional innovation competitions and hackathons.

Implementation Framework and Next Steps

The proposed governance structure anchors the partnership around a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) and a Joint Steering Committee for cross-institutional oversight, supported by regular joint meetings, shared digital collaboration platforms, and a funding strategy built on regional and international grants and industry sponsorships.

Expected outcomes discussed include increased joint publications and patents, market-ready prototypes and startups, enhanced graduate employability, and strengthened regional innovation ecosystems.

The two institutions agreed on three immediate next steps: formalising the collaboration through an MoU, identifying pilot projects and research themes for first-wave joint delivery, and establishing joint working groups to drive each pillar forward.

UNILUS is a private Zambian university founded in 2007, growing from 71 to 11,500+ students. It offers 24+ undergrad and 43+ postgrad programmes, focused on practical, industry-relevant education.

President Caps 734 Graduates at HIT's 17th Graduation Ceremony

His Excellency the President of the Republic of Zimbabwe and HIT Chancellor, Dr E.D. Mnangagwa, capped 734 graduates at HIT’s 17th Graduation Ceremony, held at the Belvedere Campus on Friday, 04 September 2026.

The graduating class comprised 402 young men and 332 young women, up from 632 graduates the previous year, with 287 physically capped on the day. Degrees were conferred across five disciplines: Engineering and Technology, Information Science and Technology, Business and Management Sciences, Industrial Sciences and Technology, and Allied Health Sciences.

In his remarks, HIT Vice Chancellor Professor Engineer Quinton Kanhukamwe reaffirmed that the institution exists because of a national mandate: to develop, incubate, transfer and commercialise technology for Zimbabwe's industrialisation. He described that mandate as resting on three pillars: HIT's destiny to be the stimulant of scholarship in innovation, its cause to cultivate commitment towards technopreneurial leadership, and its calling to commercialise technology through professionalism rooted in integrity. He linked this to the Government's Heritage-Based Education 5.0 philosophy, tracing the doctrine to the President's own inaugural address, as recorded in the official Hansard of Parliament.

Highlighting the institution's achievements over the past year, Professor Kanhukamwe pointed to a growing list of international partnerships: the University of Tokyo, an academic agreement with Seoul Cyber University, the Korea-Zimbabwe Knowledge Sharing Programme, and links with Jadavpur University (India), Bialystok University of Technology (Poland), the University of Arizona (US), and St Petersburg (Russia).

He also cited home-grown ventures that have grown out of HIT's Innovation Hub, among them Ndarama Technologies, a digital-sovereignty venture now running the Ministry of Mines' Export Permit Management System and the Citizen Engagement and Scoring Platform, alongside Matsimba Technologies' e-ticketing system, the Public Service Commission's pension platform, and a solar panel factory in Belvedere. New research infrastructure commissioned over the year includes the Catalysis and Chemical Process Engineering laboratory, the Electronics, Embedded Systems and Cyber-Physical Engineering laboratory, the Artificial Intelligence, Data and Digital Engineering laboratory, the Bio-Innovation and Health Technologies laboratory, and the Agri-Food Technology and Bioeconomy laboratory.

Looking ahead, Professor Kanhukamwe said HIT would focus on beneficiating Zimbabwe's critical minerals, building on the National Lithium Study to move the country beyond exporting raw minerals — carrying that work from characterised ore through battery-grade precursor chemistry to lithium iron phosphate cells, electric-vehicle battery packs, and eventually Zimbabwean-assembled vehicles and trams from the Hi-Tech Development Valley. His message to the graduands was unambiguous: their qualifications carry a mandate to keep innovating and commercialising technology for Zimbabwe's Vision 2030 ambitions.

Speaking after the ceremony, President Mnangagwa said he had the distinct honour of presiding over HIT's 17th Graduation Ceremony, and congratulated the 734 graduates as fully equipped to drive the nation's modernisation and industrialisation agenda. He commended HIT for continuing to anchor its programmes on Heritage-Based Education 5.0, producing innovators capable of developing tangible solutions for the country's socio-economic growth, and urged the Class of 2026 to "go forth and build, industrialise, and innovate," closing with the Shona proverb, "Nyika inovakwa nevene vayo."

President Mnangagwa congratulated the graduates as "fully equipped to drive our nation's modernisation and industrialisation agenda, "urging them to "go forth and build, industrialise, and innovate. Congratulations, Class of 2026!"

Four graduates received special recognition through the E.D. Mnangagwa Chancellor's Award. Matida Pelemba, who graduated with a Bachelor of Technology Honours Degree in Computer Science and was named Overall Best Female Student, and Sheunopa Shaun Mango, Overall Best Male Student, each received US$1 000, while Kudzaishe Mugadza and Jane Maruma received US$500 cash prizes.

The ceremony was attended by Higher and Tertiary Education, Innovation, Science and Technology Development Minister Dr Frederick Shava, Chief Secretary Dr Martin Rushwaya, Cabinet Ministers, Vice Chancellors from other universities, captains of industry, and senior Government officials.

Congratulations, Class of 2026!
