Zimsec Syllabus 4030: Scientific Calculator Tips
Zimsec recently changed the syllabus from 4008/28 to 4030 to integrate both calculator and non-calculator versions as one paper. Now the candidates have an option to chose between a calculator and mathematical tables.
Most schools have since adopted a calculator option due to different reasons which includes limited supply of math tables, ease of use and accuracy. They have since realized that using a calculator makes mathematics easy and interesting.
The new syllabus get rids of advantages some schools/candidates had over others. Now that everyone is allowed to use either tables, calculators or both, candidates are encouraged to take advantages of both methods.
In this post I will discuss about the uses of calculators in an Examination. Many candidates think that Calculators can only be used when dealing with trigonometric elements like finding a Sine or Cosine. There are few more things a Calculator can do for you:
1. Finding square, cubic, or forth roots
Paper 2 involves complex questions which might require candidates to find roots of decimal numbers, large numbers or algebraic expressions. A calculator can easily find for you.
2. Calculating Standard Forms.
Challenging Standard form questions are usually tested in Paper 2. These might include Distabce of the Sun and Other Planets, square or cubic roots of standard form numbers or population expressed in Standard Form. [Check Nov 2008 P2]. A calculator can directly evaluate standard form expressions and retain the answer in standard form
3. "Store" Function
If you have any number you would want to use later in the answer, a calculator can easily save it for you. The memory capacity is upto 7 values on standard calculator
4. Functional Notations and Substitutions
A calculator can make your life easy by calculating or verifying answers for functional notation questions { f(x) } and substitution questions
5. Decimals and Fractions
Unlike a normal calculator, a scientific one can calculate Decimals and Fractions and retain an answer in Fractions, both improper and proper fractions.
6. Approximations and Estimates. {Significant Numbers and Decimal places}
Do you still struggle to express numbers in required decimal places and significant figures? Don't worry, a calculator can do it for you.
7. Play Back Function
You can play back to see your last five calculations on the calculator .
8. Statistical Mean / Average
There are some calculators which can calculate a mean for you.
These are some of the things a calculator can do for you in the Exam. We will look into details of the above tips in the next few posts
