Harvest time after harvesting your maize you put them in a special place called dara or ngarani in order to make them dry before shelling. To get into the dara you need a ladder. The dara is built in such a way that animals do not reach the product like cattle and goats. Harvesting is done in winter then shelling is done in spring time when the mealies are quite dry. Other crops like mhunga, mapfunde and zviyo are stored in a dara just like maize. In the case of zviyo, a special ceremony called kupura zviyo is conducted.This is done by all adult villagers who come to help. There is jubilation and drinking to celebrate the harvest. The above products will be stored in a dura/hozi. When there is need the women will take the desired product and make it into flour. Next post we will talk about how to make zviyo flour for sadza.
