UNMANNED AERIAL VEHICLES REVOLUTIONARISING BUSINESS
It was first the robots that transformed the production industry then other innovations such as IT continue changing the face of industry. Of late the drone technology popularly called Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (UAV) technology has come into play.
Essentially unmanned aerial vehicles are aircraft without a human pilot aboard. These vehicles are therefore not subjected to limitations associated with the human performance. They range in size from miniature aircraft to real size aircraft and are equipped with high resolution cameras. UAVs can be equipped with accurate position sensors in the form of global positioning system (GPS) and their cost of operation can be as low as $50 per hour. Because of lack of limitations associated with human performance, pinpoint accuracy and the cost effectiveness and efficiency of their operation, UAVs have found a multitude of commercial uses in modern industry. Some of the UAV uses are:
• Commercial and motion picture film making
• Sports photography & cinematography
• Commercial aerial surveillance: crop & livestock monitoring, wildfire mapping, pipeline security, home security, road patrol, and anti-piracy
• Oil, gas and mineral exploration and production: geophysical surveys, monitoring the integrity of oil and gas pipelines
• Facility Inspection: telecommunication base station and electricity power line inspections
• Real Estate ( Aerial view of high end properties)
• Disaster relief: gathering information from affected areas, transportation of medicines and vaccines
• Search and rescue
• Surveillance (Border Patrol / Poaching)
• Conservation: wild life management
• Forest fire detection: prevention and early detection of forest fires
• Archaeology: survey work and protection of sites from squatters, builders and miners
• Remote sensing: electromagnetic spectrum, gamma ray, biological, and chemical sensors (surveying contaminated areas)
• Delivery service: courier service
We think it is time Zimbabwean industry and commerce starts benefitting from this technology which is now very well established and popular in other countries. In that respect, we are delighted to announce that a workshop where this technology will be discussed has been arranged for January 2015.
