Persistence Over Perfection: A Journey That Began at Abbey’s Day Nursery
I was not born extraordinary, but I learned early in life that greatness is not something you are given; it is something you build. It is shaped through resilience, courage, and the simple decision to keep going, even when things feel difficult.
My journey began at Abbey’s Day Nursery School, a place that laid the foundation for who I would become. More than just a school, Abbey’s instilled in me the values of honesty, teamwork, and determination, lessons that have guided me through every stage of my life.
Even now, nearly thirteen years later, the impact of Abbey’s remains vivid. One memory stands out: a school trip to Lion and Cheetah Park, where, as young children, we were encouraged to step beyond our fears by interacting with animals as powerful as lions and as intimidating as snakes. In that moment, I learned something that would stay with me forever, that courage is not the absence of fear, but the willingness to face it.
When I moved on to Eaglesvale School, I encountered new challenges in an unfamiliar environment. The transition was not easy, but the foundation built at Abbey’s Day Nursery gave me the strength to adapt. Over time, I began to thrive. I took on leadership roles as chess captain and vice-captain of the Scripture Union, participated actively in sports such as rugby, soccer, and cricket, and maintained strong academic performance, consistently ranking among the top students in my class.
High school brought even greater challenges, including moments that tested my confidence and resilience. Yet, time and again, I drew on the lessons I had learned in my early years. I found strength in perseverance, excelling academically particularly in English and Literature and growing into leadership roles as captain of the Media and Drama Club, a member of the debate team, and an active participant in service initiatives.
Beyond this, I embraced opportunities to innovate and lead. I helped establish a dance club and played a role in advocating for a war cry committee following our participation in the ATS Schools War Cry Challenge in 2023. These experiences taught me that leadership is not about standing above others, but about lifting others up and creating opportunities for growth.
Sport also played a significant role in shaping my character. Despite physical challenges, I remained committed representing hockey at both second and first team levels, playing first-team tennis, and participating in basketball. Balancing these responsibilities with academics required discipline and persistence, reinforcing the values first taught at Abbey’s.
lm grateful to be serving back to the community that nurtured me as lm taking my gap year waiting to pursue with my tertiary education , and lm serving in the Media and Marketing department at Abbeys also assisting in Literature high school level As I do so with gratitude because that community taught me that success is not about never failing, but about rising each time you fall. It was here that I learned one of life’s most important lessons: that persistence is more powerful than perfection .
To the young learners at Abbey’s, my message is simple: life will challenge you, and there will be moments when you feel uncertain or afraid. But do not let that stop you. The values you are learning now will guide you, strengthen you, and carry you further than you can imagine. Keep going. Keep trying, keep believing. In the end, it is not perfection that shapes extraordinary lives, it is persistence
